5 days ago my alcoholic sister was admitted to the hospital by her husband, who had no knowledge of her drinking, thinking she had some type of brain tumor or low blood sugar, denial can be very powerful. I had suspected she was drinking for about a month now, not knowing exactly how bad It had gotten, I confronted her and told our whole family to watch out for her (I live several states away and noticed she was off during a visit to see the family), but no one believed me and let her carry on with her independent life (Husband travels a lot for work). Anyway, her husband took her to the hospital 5 days ago and after a lot of arguments and fighting she admitted she was up to about a fifth of liquor a day. Her husband didn't believe it until he searched their home and her car where he found staggering amounts of empty bottles. Her liver had completely shut down and her brain was atrophied, in and out of a confused state. They thought she had finished detoxing and was due to go home yesterday, but kept her an extra night to be safe. Today she was increasingly agitated and started the hallucinations and DT's. It see,s like she must've been drinking more than she admitted to have such a strong DT effect 5 days after the last drink, usually happens within 3 days from what I've read. She was heavily sedated and put into the ICU and put on a Ventilator. I'm worried about her survival, hoping that she comes out of it and will enter a treatment program.
Dear Worried Welcome to MIP I am so sorry to read about your sister's illness and know how painful and diffiuclt coping with this disease can be.
Alcoholism is a progressive fatal disease over which we are powerless. Al-Anon is a fellowship of people, like yourself who live with or have lived with this dreadful disease. Al-Anon face-to-face meetings are held in most communities daily. The main hotline number is found in the white pages.
Breaking the isolation caused by the fear and worry of this disease was extremely important for my sanity and well-being. Connecting with others who truly understood and developing new coping tools-- helped/helps me to live my life trusting a higher power with courage serenity and wisdom.
If you are unable to attend we have online meetings here two times a day all are welcome.
I think John, that the meeting times should be posted here in the "information about this board" post? Or another one all together, whatever you think would be best? This is the meeting schedule that I have, please let me know if everything is correct:
Morning Meetings
Mon. - Fri. at 9am EST
Sat. - Sun at 10am EST
Each Sunday morning at 10 am EST, we will be having a Spiritual meeting with a topic relating to the Spiritual part of our program.
Night Meetings
Mon-Saturday 9PM eastern time
Sunday 7PM eastern time
Each Thursday night at 9PM EST, we will be having a Step/Tradition Meeting to help new people get to know and understand how to work the 12 steps. After going through one Step per week, and getting through the 12 of them, we then start a Tradition a week on this same night.
I know what your going through. My son has gone through 3 of these types of detoxing, ICU, ventilator and heavy sedation. Many more times in the hospital and then detox centers.
There was nothing I could do to prevent him from drinking after he got well enough. I had to let go.....
I'm so sorry and I pray she will seek help because she will die from this devastating disease without it.
Take care and keep coming back because you are not alone.
