What we could learn from our dogs

While this is not from CAL, I think it aligns well with the spirit of Al Anon and MIP and taking care of ourselves.

 If a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

  • When loved ones come home, always run to greet them;

  • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride;

  • Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure DELIGHT.

  • Take naps;

  • Stretch before rising;

  • Run, romp, and play daily;

  • Thrive on attention and let people touch you;

  • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do;

  • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass;

  • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree;

  • When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body;

  • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk;

  • Be loyal;

  • Never pretend to be something you're not;

  • If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it;

  • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently;

My poor dog has been doing the last one for days, just sitting close by and nuzzling, with the occasional hand-lick. Must shake off my gloominess and get him out tomorrow to do some of the other stuff!
Thanks for the reminder, although I know it isn't exactly what you meant :)

 Oh, that's exactly what I meant Melly!

I want my pup to learn the one about not biting and get going on his growling. He still nips at us if we 'bug'(read: antagonize) him too much, LOL! Basically, if you blow in his face more than 3 or 4 times, you should expect to have a dog snapping his teeth at you and possibly getting your nose if you're too close. I love dogs, though, but we seriously need to do some obedience training with this one. Unfortunately, my teen son and husband love to rough house with him and they let him get away with too much bad behavior.

Sounds like the son and husband need the training! We've told my son I don know how many times about thing like blowing in one of the dog's face, if she starts to growl/grumble, it's time to stop!

Okay! I'm dying to know this since I'm not a dog owner. Why is it that dogs get upset if you blow in their faces? Does anybody know?

Thank you Kenny!  This is exactly why I will NEVER live without a dog. They are such a joy...every day!
