First Time Here--have questions.

My husband is soon to be 68 years old. He is what most people call a functioning alcoholic.  He drinks anywhere from 9-12 alcoholic beverages a day.  He drinks mainly scotch and vodka.  He doesn't act drunk, no one would know he is a drinker, other than his red face.  He is shaking these days in the mornings.  He has been this kind of drinker all of his adult life.  It has not (so far) affected his life in any way.  He still seems to function like a non alcoholic.

My questions is this.

I've noticed about the last 3 months that he has been eating less.  Is this due to the alcoholism?  Is this a signal that the alcoholism is getting worse.

Why doesn't he have cirrosis of the liver by now?  I would think he'd be dead with the amount he drinks each day.

Welcome--

I don't know enough to answer your question about the change in eating.  I have known many alcoholics who in the progression of the disease keep drinking but eat rarely.  I hope you get responses from others who know more, but I just wanted to welcome you here and hope you keep coming back.

Welcome to the board. My husband had the same symptoms. When I first saw them I was in complete denial. Good for you for having awareness. My suggestion is to learn as much as you can about alcoholism, find a local alanon meeting, read this board. Those things have helped me to deal with this dreadful disease. Keep coming back. This is a wonderful group.

Hi Welcome to Al-Anon! Alcoholism that is untreated affects the health of the alcoholic in many ways and is progressive. As time passes, the effects are more severe. Fortunately for me, I have learned tools to help myself so that I could focus on my self-care.
The only person that I truly have control over.

Sure it would be nice if your husband would go to the doctor and get a check up on his condition. However whether he would take advice from a doctor or you or anybody else is up to him.
that is why we say-
I didn't cause it.
I can't control it.
I can't cure it!

Try to get to some face to face meetings to get support for Y- O- U!

My AH is the same way with eating. Some days he won't eat at all. Then there are days like today when he has no money to get his beer so he subsitutes the drink with food and eats all day. Its catching up to him. He is 40 yrs old but is looking way older and his body is already tired.
