Site Facelift.. what do you think?

I have been working hard at bring our site up to date and bringing a new, fresh look to it.  Please look around it, read the material on it, and then come back to to the message board and post under the Topic... "Site Facelift.. what do you think?"  (This one) And tell me what you think of the changes that have been made.  I would really like to hear from you with questions, and comments about it.  Our group home page is at http://www.12stepforums.net/alanon.html

Hope to hear from you soon about the work that has thus far been done.  It's not completely done, but well on its way.  smile

Also, Betty K. (aka hotrod) has been posting a lead on each of the 12 Steps every two weeks for some time now.  I am truly hopeful that more of you will go to the Stepwork Board, linked to above and on the groups main page, and share your experience, strength and hope with us every two weeks related to the step she is addressing at that time.  Right now, we are on Step 11.  This is a great way for newcomers to familiarize themselves with the 12 steps, and they are also welcome to ask step work related questions on this board.  Just go to the linked msg board window and view Al-Anon Step 11 topic.  hotrod is very good about posting on the main board each time the step work moves to the next step so please go show her some appreciation for the work she is doing in our behalf.

John

I appreciate all the effort you have put into this, John. I most especially like the button to the step board and the 12 steps and 12 traditions being posted so clearly and easily discovered.

Am I the only one experiencing part of the gray bar at the bottom moving upwards as I scroll down? It's only as the initial post goes up, doesn't repeat in the replies. It goes away when I refresh. My initial reaction to the change was thinking that someone had hacked into the site or re-directed me to a different site. Looks good though now that I'm used to it.

Hi likemyheart

I'm not sure what grey bar you are referring to. Do you mean here on the message board? The little grey bar with an envelope, white board chat box, and user info icons?

I have seen it move upward as I scrolled downward too. Not all the time but sometimes. Not sure what triggers it to do that. If that is what you are referring to, its not something on my end, it is something to do with the server our message board is on (activeboard server) so I would have to consult with them to find out why its doing that. I think it is actually designed to do it, but not sure of its purpose, what makes it come up a little bit to match the downward scrolling. It might only do it when there is actually information on it that needs to be brought to the users attention, like a PM or white board post, or someone comes on the board at the same time we are on it. I'll ask about it. If you are referring to something different, let me know with a bit more detail so I can spot it and see if its doing it to me as well, so I can determine what if anything needs to be done about it.

John

Well, now it isn't doing it, it was just part of the bar, and the bar at the bottom stayed whole - it blocked a line of text so in order to read that line I had to refresh. Doesn't seem to be doing it today though. I'll let you know if it comes back! Thanks for the attention to it though! Cheers!

I have seen the gray bar, but only when I am looking at the non-mobile version on an Android mobile device.  My Droid and my Kindle both have it, but I never see it when using IE or Firefox on a PC.  It gets annoying and in the way when it is there.  Yes, it's the grey bar with the little icons, including the down arrow.  I am pressing the down arrow to get it out of the way, but it makes me nervous when I am doing a reply on my Droid and most of what I see is a gray bar, get tired of it, and I'm afraid I will push the wrong button on the bar and lose the laboriously-edited response I was crafting!

The only site design suggestion I would have is to highlight the chat/meeting room as much as you have the 12 steps.  When somebody is new here, they are usually directed to online meetings, so making that more prominent would be useful to newbies IMO.

Otherwise, it's looking great, thanks for all the hard work!

BTW  I am waiting for the steps to wrap back around to step 1, then I will be all over it!

Kenny

PS  I am just now seeing the gray bar in IE on a PC running Win 7.  It is staying stationary and at the bottom, so it isn't really annoying to me.  Then when I click the down arrow it collapses into a very thin gray line with an up arrow on it.

Oh good I am not the only one. When I try to scroll the grey bar makes italmost impossible to read shares. I have to keep refreshing!

I do my best to accept whatever changes come to the mip board. Myself I find it seems to muck things up in some way. Like this grey line thing. Also I like things clean and not all busy. I am very simple minded....as you know. lol

love,debilyn

Here's what I've found after paying attention to the grey bar - It loves attention...... lol. Actually I watched it and it splits and moves up with the original post unless I give it a few seconds before scrolling down to read the post. If I click on a topic and wait till everything stops adjusting itself, a few seconds, like I said, then the grey bar doesn't ghost itself and cover the line of text. And hitting refresh takes it away if I do start to scroll to quickly. Note to self: slow down

I had made peace with the gray bar, after all I didn't cause it, couldn't cure it, and didn't seem to be able to control it! lol

LOL, Kenny!!! LOL!!!!

Just to add a little something to the mix now that we no longer have a gray bar or any of the stuff on the gray bar as LMH so astutely pointed out - shall we compose an ode to the gray bar, play taps, hold hands, and gently but firmly say goodbye to that which is no more?

likemyheart, to access what was on the grey bar, just look where your nick is at the top of the board. If you have a white wall messsage or a pm it will show there under your nick. Also at the bottom of the main board, you can see who is online at that time. So, we can still use the features without the bar being a issue.

Ok John - but - (and there's always a but eh?) having to wait two beats before scrolling was therapeutic in its way, I had to wait - patience never being a virtue of mine, learning to accept the wait had to have been good for me, yes? (and thanks!)

lol Kenny.
I never got to see this illustrious grey bar. Was it a phone and tablet thing? I feel that I have missed out

It used to show up at the bottom of the message board screen, Melly. I use both a desktop and a laptop - both sported that gray bar. Drove me batty sometimes. I'm glad its gone. Thanks, John.

John, one other thing I've noticed in the past couple weeks. When I use my Kindle with Silk browser to interact with the forum, on non-mobile mode, it tends to resize spontaneously every time I load a page. Sometimes it bounces back to the magnification I had set originally, other times it stays incredibly small. Sometimes it looks like it is done bouncing around, so I resize it, only to have it again spontaneously resize to some giant magnification.

I have no idea if this is due to the site changes, but earlier in the month I'm pretty sure it didn't do this, so I just thought I would let you know that.

Thanks for all your hard work on this. I love this forum and keep telling my F2F Al Anon friends to give it a try!

Kenny

John, I love what you have done to the site. And the only improvement would be and few others have voiced this too is to have a "Love" button. ....... og
