The Power of the Daily Reader!!!

I read the Courage to Change, One Day at a Time and more recently Hope for Today. They teach and reinforce the philosophy of Alanon and they help me try hard to live it everyday. They all seem to have their own purpose. The ODAT is brilliant, even if a bit old fashioned, full of wisdom. The Courage to Change seems to me to be more modern and again full of wisdom especially for people with alcoholic spouses. The Hope for Today is new in my life and I really like it, again full of wisdom and at times the readings are for children of alcoholics. These books mean a lot to my progress, they stop me forgetting that Im trying to live and think a different way. What does your readers mean to you?

When I first started in Alanon the ODAT was the only reader.

There were members whose ODAT was worn with frequent use- pages marked and some even falling out. I had never ever seen a book before so often used and referred to. Over time I found that these were the members who I listened to most.

Each one can be helpful to me in different ways. I carry ODAT in my purse because its my smallest reader. C2C is the most used. Hope for Today is one I find helpful most especially in relationship to my family of origin. I also added The Language of Letting Go to this library although it is not an Al-Anon reader when I was in CoDA. It still is a big help to me in my relationships since it is helpful to me in focusing on myself when I'm going through some unsettling time.

The ODAAT was also the only daily reader when I entered the rooms of Al-Anon and then the others came along and I find each one is appropriate to growth.  The Hope for Today includes growth from the days of the Courage to Change with has the growth from the days of ODAAT.  We have the whole library in our house of CAL literature; it all pertains because the disease has touch every aspect and corner of our lives.  My ODAAT is as David describes it and as long as the print is the easiest to see and read it will stay with me.  These pieces of literature all come from within the fellowship...the members who came before us and who walked the journey and returned to tell us how its done.   Grateful beyond words.  Get a subscription to the "Forum" also...you won't be let down.   (((hugs))) smile

Thanks, my C2C book fell in the bath so looks much older than it actually is.lol. I love the thought of those early Alanoners working on those readings, like little angels giving so many people something to live by. Amazing really. Jerry, I dont know if Forum is available here, I have old copies that I was given but I think it stopped here, could be wrong though. I will look into it. I like News and Views too but not sure how to subscribe. Thanks.x

Thank You LC for sharing your thoughts on our Daily Readers.

My ODAT is extremely old, worn and marked up  as is my C2C.  I love both and have read them daily for years.  The Hope for Today is rather new and I am finding it just as enlightening and inspiring

All are a wonderful way to start the day

I LOVE all 3 & they have literally been a lifesaver through the years!

I am sad though, my puppy needed some Al-Anon & chewed up the 1st few months in my ODAT, like pg 16, a favorite of minecry

I have a new one but geez its just "to new" LOL

I also read The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beatty, Not conference approved but I LOVE HER & ALL THE READINGS:)

If you don't have all of these, I encourage you all to make it a priority....ours books can pull us right up out of some pretty dark placesevileye

I have the C2C posted to my facebook every day so it is there waiting for me as soon as I fire up my computer in the morning. (yep, compulsive facebook checker lol). It's linked to the al-anon official website so I don't believe there are any copywrite issues. It's nearly always so very relevant and can be applied to something that is on my mind plus it gets me into a programmy-kinda frame of mind. I should invest in the others, thanks for the reminder

Thats a great resource Melly. I quite like to handle them with my hands, lol because at the back is an index page so whatever comes up I can look up the topic and this helps me. The steps are there too and Im not that far on with these but the books have helped me get to know the steps as there are readings on each of them. I write to learn, so I have notebooks of writing that I do to help me get better at understanding this program. Thanks for the feedback everyone.x
