I had asked earlier about seeing this movie and ALL I can say is it's a MUST see for ANYONE who loves the books or the movie Mary Poppins. I will never ever watch that movie the same way.
Actually after the movie the kids and I watched Mary Poppins, I guess the movie as a child had always left me feeling disjointed not in a bad way .. I just knew that there was something else attached to the movie. It now has a very deep rich meaning to me. I enjoyed it like never before because so much more made sense. PS Travers vision of Mary Poppins makes so much more sense to me than the Disney one does.
It is a very good lesson in untreated alanon and how someone's life can be given away based upon their childhood experience both good and traumatic. It has also made me want to learn more about Walt Disney .. what a complex man. I mean that in a good way. He did not have an easy early life, it makes sense that his parks are in Florida and California.
Anyway, it is a MUST see and anyone who is thinking about attending Alanon .. this movie is every reason TO go to meetings and find ways to escape the trap that alcoholism puts us in .. it is truly a family disease. We can still love the A and hate the behavior without loosing who I am. Just right now I don't like the A in my life a lot and it's complicated due to circumstances.
Hugs S :)

I saw Life of Pi and thought it was good. I am looking forward to see the Mr Banks movie, too. Thanks for sharing a bit about it without giving away the plot or the story line!!!
Wow, I really want to see this now - I did already as a MAJOR disney fan but wow. Funny that my parents went to see this recently and they both loved it, and my dad was reading an article about an alcoholic in recovery in our local paper yesterday and said it had him up all night thinking about it after. Both parents are ACOA (not in any sort of treatment or anything though) - without having seen the movie I wonder if this is why it resonated with them so.
I took my 8 & 10 year old to see it per their request. I didn't realize what the content would be. My 8 year old who is so insightful and intuitive loved it. She has had a lot of questions about the disease of alcoholism. It's interesting. She was really fascinated. I too enjoyed the movie.
One of my bff's and I took the kids and I think there is a misconception about it being fluffy because after all its a Disney movie and Walt Disney, Mary Poppins what is more bubble gum sweet than that? I looked at her and said you know what the movie is about right? We left the theater and she says .. you knew I was unaware of the content .. I laughed and said yeah I kind of figured .. it's ok because it's good dialog in any house to have after the movie. :) it wasn't my first choice for my youngest .. he's 9 and had some questions about it.

I just saw it last night and loved it! I really want my daughter to watch it. I think it's so powerful for children to see there are others they can relate to. The little girl in the movie had much the same role in her father's disease as my daughter has had in her father's. I hope she will watch it with me and maybe it will open up some communication. We haven't talked in a couple of weeks about our deep issues. When things are good, we often forget to keep the communication open. This movie will help open us up again, I hope.
Just saw this today. I'm not much of a crier at movies, but this one really got to me. Reminded me of the issues our family faced growing up with the AF (my AH). Very powerful message.
Saw it tonight with the recovering abf. It really touched us both deeply. I think they did a great job showing how the disease and the effects of it can progress without recovery. There were lots of tears in the theatre including our own. We really need more movies like this that present alcoholism with sensitivity and compassion. I hope it gets people talking, educates people and helps clear up misconceptions about alcoholism. TT
