Active Alcoholism in the news. Right in front of a city!

Hi Everyone,

Not sure how many of you follow the news but the mayor of Toronto Rob Ford, has been caught several times with drugs, intoxicated in public, and acting lewdly.

Living in the area, It's amazing to see the constant empty apologies, the 'let's forget it and just move on' rhetoric, and the manipulative behavior that this man behaves without any sort of change taking place.

What I find amazing is that I'm recognizing these things! hahaha. I have a better understanding of how he is thinking and I can see all these things that others maybe don't and that I otherwise would not have seen in the past.

This program is something else.

Keep coming back.

Aloha Jim...Yeah he is all over the world new system now and everyone knows and knows that they know including him.  He's got an addiction problem; he is now dummy.  The solution to the problem lays best with those like yourself who know this disease from the inside out; like you say you recognize it, and then get an opportunity to step up anonymously and build boundaries just as we have learned in Al-Anon and MIP.  It takes constant work because the disease is sooooo old.   I have my way of suggesting change which gets a read and no exercise yet and then I keep it out in front of those who have the position...just wish they weren't all politicians. LOL  Rob Ford is typical addict/alcoholic.  He's dying; killing himself hope he isn't leaving Toronto in "less than condition".   Keep coming back ((((hugs)))) smile

I was in a major city several years ago when it was learned their mayor was having an affair with the wife of one of closest aids. Public sentiment was that he was a great mayor and his private business was his private business. Then, a few weeks later, it was announced that he had an alcohol problem and he was going to rehab. Public sentiment then was that he was a great mayor and his private business was his private business. I was glad I was returning to my little city where that wouldn't fly and being an active alcoholic would result in a recall. What surprised me about this major city's public sentiment towards having an active alcoholic for a mayor was the huge number of AA/NA/Al-Anon meetings offered 7 days a week at all times and in all places of the City. Also, a huge homeless population lined all the streets. I just didn't get it. I really didn't get it. I'm not saying an active alcoholic should be tarred and feathered, but when they are actively engaged in serious drinking, I do think it does affect their job performance although the majority of City folk according to TV polls at that time didn't think so. I guess I like living in my little City better. They may not have all the meetings the big City had, but I do think they believe a Mayor's active alcoholism will affect his job performance.

Well, He offered a public apology today for his drugs/alcohol, his hanging around known gang members, meeting sketchy characters in alleys etc.. but he never really said what he was apologising for. It seemed like something we've already heard. 'It won't happen again...I mean it THIS time'. It's what everyone wanted to hear so it will hold us over nicely until the next incident.

Everyone here is calling for his resignation and even expected it at his presser, but he announced that 'we should just put this behind us and get back to work for YOU.....the taxpayers'  because after all all this nonsense is just taking time away from US....how can we be so selfish? He even announced he'd be running again in 2014. A reporter was heard laughing in the back as he said all this.

The way I see it, Mr.Ford really doesn't think he's done anything wrong. He BELIEVES he's fine and that his behaviour is just a small blip. It's not a lie if you believe. His brain is wired so that it must go to any means to get that next hit. Afterall, he's the mayor of Toronto and his family are multi-millionaires.....how can HE be an addict? Addicts are welfare cases or sleeping in alleyways.

He constantly plays the victim in all this. Everyone is always trying to 'set him up'. The police, his politcal foes, the Toronto Star (newspaper). We have it all wrong. he never lied in all this....we just didn't ask the questions properly.

Oh, he's good.....he's really good. smile

Washington DC had a crackhead mayor too. Marion Barry. Not sure if he went to rehab but he reemerged as a zealot black muslim and the populace ate it up.
