believing in HP

I am struggling with the idea of believing in a HP.

I read posts where people turn things over to HP, HP speaks to them, etc.

I have been working on finding a spiritual path. I pray, but it mostly feels like I am talking to myself.  I use a lot of affirmations, and that makes sense to me.

I realize that in dealing with an alcoholic, many things can be out of your control, so turning over a problem to a HP provides relief.

I don't have an active A in my life, and I feel like most things in my life are within my control.
One of my friends prays about meeting a husband. She said it's in God's hands. Well, I want to meet someone to marry also. I get out of the house a lot, am active, and proactively put myself in situations where I may meet someone.

I have been going to church lately. I am Catholic but I have been attending different services of different faiths to see what's out there. My grandmother is rolling over in her grave right now!  I am using the TWYLALTR theme when I attend a service.  That has been working for me, but I am still trying to figure out a relationship with a HP.

Thanks for listening and letting me ramble!

Can anyone share some good ESH here?  Maybe how did you find your HP?  Do some of you believe in karma and HP?

You might try reading the in the AA Big Book 'Chapter to the Agnostic. ' It might be a good starting point for those who are struggling with the concept of a HP.

I joined a new Church in town the same time I returned (after many years) back to AlAnon. Im not sure what a Higher Power is to me - sometimes its my "little mind in my head", other times its just "someone else to carry me", other times its the "AlAnon group".

Ive had 2 situations in my life the past 2 days that I just said to myself "turn it over and let someone else worry about it, dont dwell on them and maybe they'll turn out okay" and because of this I believe I slept better last night.

Good Morning Molly,

My sense of HP is a tad warped.  LOL   I have no formal religion, my parents never raised me in any specific religion, nor did I ever choose one.  I do call my HP God.  I have no clue if he (I use he but I'm not stuck on if my HP is he/she) is pure energy, light or what?  I sometimes wonder if we need to personify our God to understand him and relate.  I do have Christian beliefs.

I love your approach of going to different churches and services for a test drive.  To me, a specific religion and a specific church is merely a vehicle to help us in our relationship with our HP.  There are so many moral parrallels to the religions, the my view is that they are merely many human's interpretation and no one is wrong or right.

As for many things in my life being w/in my control, I'm coming to realize or believe that only my choices and my behaviors are under my control.   I can not directly control the outcome of an event.  Take a sporting event for instance.  If I don't train or practice, I'll probably do poorly.  If I train and practice, I can't guarantee that I'll win or come in first, only if I've done my best.

I believe in fate and karma as well.  Fate to me is the road map of life.  We are placed in it at a certain point.  There are many opportunities for us to make choices that would bring us to a destination that our HP wishes us to be at, but it's ultimately our choices that determine which paths we take to get there.  There might even be multiple destinations and end points that are possible, again, our choices dictate that.

I believe that my HP may wish to take things over for me when two circumstances are met.  First, that my HP is ready, second, when I'm ready.   When I turn things over to my HP, my running joke w/ him is that I ask him to take what he likes and leave the rest.  I figure he knows better than I what needs to be lifted from me.

My beliefs are subject to change.  LOL  They are basically a hodge podge of beliefs I've had since childhood mixed in w/ life experiences and more recently the ESH of Alanoners.

H,

It has helped me to listen to www.joycemeyer.org online.  She's an evengelist who's been though it all.  She happens to come from my old neighborhood....she has new TV and radio broadcasts daily.  Oops, is that an advert?

Well, helps me.

If you seek, you will find, I am sure

No matter where it is
