ACOA and now a parent

I recently had a baby, and it the transition into parenthood is difficult with an alcoholic mother.  I relate to my mother on an emotional and biological level, and I fear that I will become her as a mother myself.  She want to be a part in my child's life but I told her she can't until she seeks help....she lies to me constantly now saying that she goes to counseling and rehab and that she wants to see my daughter but I know she's lying because she calls me drunk!!!  I don't know what to do, I want to move forward with my life and just be the best mom I can be, but deep in my heart is a sadness and a desire to save my own mother...

Dear gardengirl Welcome to MIP

A big congratulations on your new baby. First time parenting is and exciting, difficult time to begin with so please be gentle with yourself.

Know that alcoholism is a disease over which we are powerless . Living with this disease we develop coping tools that result in our feeling as you describe. Angry, resentful, sad and fearful. This is a joyful time in your life and to feel that joy we all found that we needed a program of recovery.

Alanon is that Recovery Program. It is a fellowship of people who share their common problems and grow and change by supporting each other. The hotline number can be found in the white pages of the telephone directory Please call and plan to attend. Pick up some literature and begin the process of YOUR recovery. We who live with this disease need to break the isolation and obtain the support that only those who live with this disease can give.

Keep coming here as well . You are not alone and there is hope
