Profound thought just popped into my head while half asleep this morning......

The alcoholic is addicted to and obsessed with one more drink. I am addicted to and obsessed with one less drink. This is why I need Al-Anon. Geo

Hi Geo, interesting post. to me, it's more accurate to say, I am obsessed with one more "think." the alcoholic has a drinking problem, I have a thinking problem, that's why I need al-anon. I think too much. If you were to let go of your "think" that your A should drink less, you might be more peaceful. that's the way it works for me.

Aloha Geo...this is why Al-Anon is such a beautiful garden for me...others come to plant new seeds and a flower of a different shape and color emerges and I get to see the picture different and understand more.

Thanks Much.   (((hugs))) smile

Nice one!

I used to say- the alcoholic picks up a drink and we try to pick up an alcoholic.

I like it but alcoholics also have serious thinking problems and most folks in AA will tell you they have a "thinking disease" more than a drinking disease. During my active alcholism I was never concerned with "just one more drink," I was concerned with many more. I was concerned with never running out. I was concerned with getting hammered to oblivion. 1 more was not on the radar. That's just my experience.

It's a bit nit picky and I'm not trying to come off that way but I think your thought is generally true in terms of just the alcoholic having a disease of "more" and the alanoner more having an obsession with "control and limiting." dunno.

Great topic, glad you brought it here, Geo!  I was raised by two double-winner sponsors from two different states who taught me that al-anons and AA's basically have the same disease, our obsessions separate us from our Higher power. Al-anon literature talks a lot about our obsessive thinking, how the alcoholic is obsessed with drink and the al-anon is obsessed with the alcoholic, watching, monitoring, controlling... which causes hurt, self-pity, embarrassment, superiority, resentment and anger (the separation.) Serenity is possible with changes in attitude, expectations and responses, but that isn't a matter of chance. It's a matter of choice. (thoughts)
