One Day at a Time

Even though my mother never found Alanon, she seemed very good at practicing principles of detachment and taking it odaat.  One day shared with me that her friend always said one day at a time to her. I later learned that her friend was divorced from an alcoholic.  I told my mother that one day at a time was a slogan in our program and asked if she would like to learn more about it.  I mailed her an article from Forum Apr. 88 about the slogan.  Here is a small part of that article which was published with a picture of a rose and slogan.  It helped me to read it again today.

The rose is an apt symbol for this concept: at first the bud is fragile, tiny and tightly furled. Then slowly it opens up, day by day, petal by petal, to reveal a lush velvety blossom, exquisitely fragrant and magnificent to behold.

One Day at a Time reminds us to take on only what we can handle now. In our zeal for healthy, active lives, we sometimes get ahead of ourselves, rushing headlong beyond the limits of this 24 hours, expecting too much of ourselves and of the day. This frenzied pace can lead us to frustration and disappointment and again we lose sight of the beauty of the moment.

The answer is, in Alanon we do it one day at a time.

For me... especially now - one hour or minute at a time.  Thanks for letting me share with you.  TT

thank you TT. Your mother was very wise. Hoping you are still treating yourself tenderly.

Those one days, each one we learn from, we also heal just a tiny bit more, or love a tiny bit more. Every day is precious whether grieving, healing from injury or falling in love.

sending you hugs,debilyn

One of my mothers wise things I remember is; if you are going to wear levis and overalls make sure you where a feminine pretty top....lol

It's funny but I've heard one day at a time and the serenity prayer at various times growing up, never knowing they were recovery tools that others in my family were using. Thank you for sharing today because this is the one slogan that gets me through my days, literally. And yes, sometimes it's one minute at a time, too!
