Is it too late to drop the class? I know this class is a huge prerequisite for what you are studying but is it possible to take it next semester?

Being a new teacher you will have to approach this carefully but does he have an open door policy or office hours? Perhaps the study group can set up a meeting with him, or have him come to study session?

Or the group could perhaps have an ongoing list of questions from the session and bring those in to the class?

Having done it myself, I know the first year of teaching is brutal and a big shock and you have no idea what works.  I'm sorry you're on the receiving end of his need for practice.  The good news is that it sounds as if he's realized that he goofed in how he made the test.  It's helpful that most of the class did badly -- no instructor can ignore that.  And that he is going to discard parts and give a retest does show that he knows he has to do better.  It's a tense situation for you, but instructors that recognize they goof are the best kind.  I'd suggest going over the parts of the exam you missed and figuring out exactly what the right answer would have been.  It sounds as if you shouldn't have to -- those parts of the exam were too hard -- but it will be a useful way of studying, because it shows the parts he thinks you should know.  Getting together a study group and working through them together would be very helpful.

Hopefully your instructor realizes that he needs to refine his teaching strategies. It's one thing to know a subject and a whole other thing to teach it. I know. I teach. Fortunately for me I teach at the much lower grade levels and can check for understanding throughout my lessons. I know when my students are ready to be tested. But college/university teaching is so different.

As had been mentiopned, he can't flunk the whole class or even most of his students; it would be a very bad reflection on him. I'm absolutely sure he realizes this. He'll have to make adjustments as he goes. I would not stress over this. I would focus on passing the class and not entertain the "what if I don't pass this class" thought. Tell yourself that someway, some how you'll find ways to get through it. Ask HP for guidance.

My son is a nurse and I saw him struggle at times when taking his courses. Nursing courses aren't easy. Studying was his life for a while.

Funny, just the other day I asked him a question regarding one of my blood tests. He was embarassed that he didn't know the answer. He told me that so much of what is taught in the courses he forgot because he simply just doesn't use it in his daily work as a nurse.

This is an opportunity to continue training your thoughts to stay on the positive side of the road. You're headed down a road that will enable you to provide well for your daughters and you. It's a rewarding profession, but it is also very demanding.

Be positive. Don't entertain negative thoughts. You WILL get through this!  Every experience, whether we perceive it as good or bad, is an oppotunity to grow.  It's life.  Getting through this class will only make you stronger and more capable of nursing.
