I like Tradition Eight

We had a tradtion eight meeting at my home group this week.  I have always liked this tradition and it's statement of Alanon as a program of equals.  I'm not sure I would have kept coming back if people in Alanon meetings had exerted themselves as authorities of physical health, mental health, finances or event planning.  Maybe I would have felt only Alanoners who had formal professional training in a specific area of service could do it well. Coming into the rooms with low self esteem, I needed a place where everyone was worthy of respect by virtue of just being another human being and accepted.  I needed and still do...  a come as you are (a human being) kind of place to share my feelings and hear others without judgements attached to specific professions. How nice it's been to meet with one another and understand that no matter what we do for work, that hat, that affiliation is left outside the doors of Alanon. This is not to say that our talents and knowledge isn't useful in our lives and for working our own program. It's just to say that it's a great feeling for me to know we can share what's on our hearts as equals and bond through our only credential for membership which is that we're people whose lives have been effected by alcoholism.  TT

That's a diamond of a share!!!  With your permission I would like to copy it and take it to my home group, The Wednesday Night Turning Point AFG.  Please.  I won't print it until you say I can share it.   I remember when I became a "professional" in the addiction counseling field my sponsor alerting me on my unconscious and conscious decision.  "Remember, you cannot sell a 12th step".  I remained an equal member of the AFG.  Mahalo Nui Tired.  (((((hugs))))) smile

The Traditions are a Gold MIne that are  filled with much wisdom and compassion.  Each and every tradition affirms the importance of each individual member and how  alanon leaders are merely trusted servants who do not rule.

I love the traditions

Tradition 8 is the one that I have to think about the most. I'm just mark the double winner here. This tradition is so much easier to abide by when you don't counsel folks day in and day out. I am also considering working in the field of rehab which would really be a step into being in that category of paid worker cuz they advertise that they want experience and knowledge of the 12 steps to be a counselor in rehabs. To a degree I work with substance abusers now (usually teenage pot users who think they have no problems). I guess what I would have everyone know is that even despite being a counselor - a substance abuse counselor at the time too, alcholism completely wrecked me AND I was dominated and thrown for loops by another alcholic too. That is what really qualifies me to be here....the rest is just stuff. The disease is equal opportunity and it made my life a total mess and no degree or training could protect me. Only the 12 steps and a spiritual awakening changed things and that is how this program and AA works for every person ideally - regardless of jobs, training...etc.
