I am a recent member of Al-anon, as well as a member of AA. I had a drinking problem for quite some years. 1999-2007. My last drink was January 7, 2007. Since that time I gave birth to two more children, got married and came to find out that my husband is a heroin addict. I transferred my addiction to his. I am presently in an out-patient program & attend several AA as well as Al-anon meetings. At this time I am looking for a sponsor. . . Any ideas? This is my first time looking for one. Any ideas would help.

Thank you

Welcome to MIP, and I am especially glad you walked through the doors of Al-anon!!

As you probably already know, AA and Al-anon both work the 12 steps, however there is a different focus. For this reason, it works BEST for me to have a double-winner sponsor, someone who actively attends BOTH meetings, treating BOTH sides of the disease.

I briefly had a temporary AA sponsor. She would often say, "I don't know what to tell you." I guess she could not understand the al-anon/ACA brain, she tried so hard to get me to "just snap out of it!" lol

Glad you're here to share your journey with us ((hugs))

I am a double winner too, with many years sobriety but a recent arrival in al-anon. I found that my ACOA background meant for me that recovering from alcoholism alone wasn't enough to make my life work, because I was suffering the effects of the disease in anorher way. Over the years, despite being in recovery for my own addiction, I ,was still nuts, and serenity eluded me because of how the As in my life were affecting me...how I reacted. Since al-anon I have finally started to recover myself from the emeshed chaos. As far as sponsors go, look out in meetings (listen out) for someone of the same gender whos recovery you admire and whos story you identify with. Someone with strong program who has done the steps and working them in all areas of life on an ongoing basis. Then just ask them...take the risk that they might say no, but the right one will be iurt there! Good luck and glad you're here. Tigger x

Thank you both so much for the feedback. I have attended several AA, Al-anon & women's meetings. It could be I was not looking hard enough. I too have found the dual meetings of great help. Having been on both sides of the fence, I have found them both extremely useful, yet unique in their own right.
