So I just got the results from my bloodwork today. Looks like I have high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and my liver enzymes are high apparently all due to alcohol. Think I have alcohol-induced pseudo cushing syndrome. I started drinking heavily when I was 21 and I just turned 32. I don't drink every day, maybe every other day like 3-4 times a week. During the week if I drink it'll be maybe 8 drinks, but Fridays will be more like 12 or more. Funny thing is I'm going on a spring break trip tomorrow with my wife and old drinking buddies. I've been fighting stopping alcohol for a long time by taking potassium and magnesium supplements, milk thistle, not drinking two days back to back. It looks like I lost the battle though. If I keep drinking I'll get Cirrhosis. My liver is already inflammed. I have two kids, both very young. I hold a stable job, aren't violent, and pretty much to be honest enjoy drinking. I'm wondering what the next steps are. My doctor told me to cut down on the drinking which means maybe I can get away with only drinking on weekends(?) I don't want to do it half-ass but maybe I could just lighten up on it a lot and still enjoy the occasional drink. Any thoughts?
Your doctor knows you will do what you want to do. That includes lie to yourself and deceive yourself on what alcohol is really doing to your body. Already you are trying to tell yourself being a weekend drinker vs a weekday drinker is a good compromise. Well, that is a grave deception.
My question to you is this. Do you want to live. If you do, then you are at the right place, only you need to talk to those who are addicted to alcohol...they'll steer you in the right direction.
I have a Blast in life fyi without drinking, drugging etc. We play, we dance, we do sports etc etc and never have a hangover or confusion from not remembering what we said or did. Lots of alcoholics are working....today. It is not what the future will look like. But they are getting by today. My ex A drank heavily from the time he was of legal age to buy it, 21 to this day. He is 58. Missing a leg (alcohol wrecks your circulatory system, plus the tobacco on top of it for him), has alcoholic brain (shrinking brain from the damge due to alcohol), has been diagnosed with alcoholic dementia. Has not been able to hold a job for 4 years now. He has lost everything. He too sounded just like you back in the day. Exactly, including the liver enzymes. Our boys were 5 and 7 yrs old when this was first diagnosed. Today, he has nearly died 3 times. He is a ticking time bomb and we all know it. Just a matter of time before he is found dead. And he is young. Such a shame. Now, he gets his food from a food bank, is on the brink of bankruptcy again and is in a wheelchair. Totally dependent on others. He wasn't mean either. In the beginning. Only later. But! He Like his alcohol and No One was going to tell him he couldn't have it.
I'm glad your doctor told you to cut down. The question is, is "what you like" more important than your life? This is truthfully what you are talking about.
Best regards to you and praying you make decisions to show your love and protection of your family. Your coming here shows you are considering the state of your health. Good for you! PS There is a board for AA here, the folks over there will be your best help.
