I do agree the books that have been suggested are very powerful and have guided  my program for a long time

Some of my favorite  Pamphlets are:

Hard cover books

How alanon Works

When I got Busy I got Better

Hello, I'm Rachel. I am 19 years old and attended my first Al-Anon meeting today with my older sister. Our mother has been an alcoholic for close to 7 years now. It really never sunk in that it had affected me so deeply until my sister (who has worked with recovering teen addicts in a treatment center and is very familiar with the disease of alcoholism) mentioned something about it to me.

Long long long story short, I put two and two together, realized that I truly wasn't happy with who I was and needed to surrender to my Higher Power. I am planning on attending my local Al-Anon meetings every Friday over the noon hour, but since I will be moving in March to Florida with my husband, I want to be sure that I have some literature to get me set and keep me on the right path until I can find another Al-Anon group down there for support.

I was thinking of getting the One Day At A Time and Courage to Change bundle from the Al-Anon site, but I am not sure if there is any other Al-Anon literature that I would benefit from owning (although I'm sure I could never get too much of it). I've heard wonderful things about One Day At A Time, but little to nothing about the other books. Can anyone offer me some insight, maybe even a quick blurb about some of the Al-Anon literature you have encountered? Thanks so much!

HHi there and welcome to MIP. Courage to Change, One Day at a Time and Hope for Today are the 3 daily readers I use the most. When I first found Mop everyone told me "Getting Them Sober" by Toby Rice Drews was a great book and they were right. I am glad you found a meeting and hopefully in time you can find a sponsor. Keep up the good work.

Aloha Rachel...gosh I can't remember what it was like to be 19 and if you keep yourself healthy you've got a long time a head of you...one day at a time...and you can reach the point I'm at where you'll forget also.  All of the literature is great!! and you have time to eventually read it all if you so like.

My spouse and I have a large library of Al-Anon Literature which we read and re-read at times.  The daily readers are...daily readers or topic readers if you want to learn about a certain aspect of the disease and recovery.  There are the book that have been published about the members sharing their journeys over time.  I like these also because the perspectives of the membership, those who have earned peace of mind and serenity is what I go for...it is what has worked for them and will work for me too if I listen, learn and practice.

Take your time and look up the stuff that has already been suggested by the MIP ladies.    (((((hugs))))) smile

as an adult child of an alcoholic, my favorite daily reader is Hope for Today but I also like Courage to Change. I also like How Al-Anon Works, which is now available in soft cover (nicely reduces the cost). As an adult child, I would also highly recommend investing in From Survival to Recovery, which is filled with shared experiences of adult children.

if you know where in Florida you will be moving to, you can easily go online and find meetings that will be near you prior to your move. once you're in Florida, you can determine which of those meetings suits your needs best.

I wish you all the best in your journey! God Bless You
