VickyWelcome to MIP

Alcoholism is a dreadful disease and I am glad you are seeking help for yourself and that your son in rehab..

Both my son and husband have been struck by this disease and I know that it is much more difficult to watch a child suffer than an adult We as moms do not want to hear that we are powerless over our children and that the very things attempting to do may just be hurting the situation
.

The truth is your son is in the right place. Please find alanon face to face meetings in your community The tools that we use are universal. Prayer , live on day at a time, focused on yourself breaking the isolation, and trusting HP saved my sanity and life.

Meetings can be found in your community by checking the white pages of the telephone directory

It is all a process and unfortunately there are no quick fixes

Please keep coming here as well . Sharing the journey is very important

Aloha Vicky.  What was helpful to me when I got into Al-Anon and most of the membership was female and I was male; was to learn how to listen for the similarities rather than the difference between my experiences and theirs.  I was taught that in the face to face meetings and when I learned it I realized the commonality of the disease of addiction.  My wife wasn't solely alcoholic...she was also a drug addict and seeing the similarities helped me more than anything else.

Hotrods suggestion of face to face meetings in your area is "gold".  The program is over 65 years old and has helped millions recover from the effects of addiction to their lifes.  This is a non-denominational disease it doesn't care about divisions in gender status or the like...it drives its victims insane and kills many of them so it is also a fatal disease.

The hotline number for Al-Anon in your area is in the white pages of your local telephone book.  Get it and call to see where and when we meet in your area.   Glad you came to MIP and hope to hear you've made the rooms.

((((((hugs)))))) smile

You might find more people similar to you in Narcanon because drugs are typically what pushes young people into rehab rather than alcohol. Unfortunately those groups are less common and harder to find than alanon. I am wondering if the rehab he is going to can offer you a more specific support group.
