Breaking out of isolation

In trying to reclaim my life, I have gotten busy and gotten out of the house a lot. I'm involved in some great groups doing both personal and civic things. But, what I haven't done is invite those who don't know me well into my "inner sanctum".

Tonight, a few people who don't know I am the wife of an alcoholic were invited into our home. They know me well, but they had never met my AH.

A part of me was nervous wondering what they would see. I felt naked, like I was standing there saying: Here I am. This is what I am. And this person I'm married to is a part of making me who I am. For better or worse.

Another part of me realized how far I've come with my detachment. I knew that no matter what happened, I'm not my AH. He isn't me. We are two individual people. I didn't try to explain or cover or do anything I wouldn't do normally. I was just me. And AH was himself.

It was a huge step out of my isolation to invite people into our home.

I am glad you are reaching out. I am also glad you stated you are not your AH and that you are an individual. Sometimes I get so wrapped up into my Al-anon recovery I forget I am more than just a codependent enabler and an ACOA's. We are so much more and these are just labels to help our awareness, but in no way describe who we are, just were we have come from. So kudo's to you for living life! I am sending you love and support on your journey!

Man, what progress!!! Good for you for breaking out, and good for you for letting go of the burden of worrying what other people are thinking!! Way to work it!

Congrats. So much of recovery is about trying new things and stepping out of the comfort zone. If nothing changes, nothing changes....Great job on doing some work to actually change :)

A thought that hit me this morning: It is not my place to explain my AH to anyone. He is who he is.

One more step toward acceptance.
