Detox !

My poor husband, trying so hard to quit drinking! Input way to the er to deal with the pain of detox. He's been up since 4 and I can't even imagine the agony. I am proud of him for his efforts.

I would not be empathizing quite as much. He's not really that much of a victim. If I could stop drinking and go to AA, anyone can.

It sounds like you are awfully enmeshed in his being diseased. How about letting him be responsible for himself some?

It is hard, we do become enmeshed. Thats something I am working on, when my A says "oh I feel so awful" as he is detoxing. I say "I am sure you will feel better soon" and I can now detach from it with love. He knows what to do to make himself feel better, hot baths, etc... I can't make him do anything though. Its on him. I am proud of you Marianne for coming on here and posting :)

Thanks so much!  I've been doing a really good job of detaching too.  I know it sounded like I was very enmeshed from my post (which I made while trying to keep calm in the taxi on the way to the ER this morning) but I actually cut myself out for a bit.  I accompanied my AH to the ER helped him get settled and then went home, got back in bed, took a nap, got up, walked the dog and went to work.  He's admitted for a few days to complete his detox and I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing - I have dinner plans with a friend this evening that I am keeping and I'm at work feeling just fine.  I'm SO glad for this program, for this message board to keep me sane (I can't exactly be talking about this stuff while at work so the board gives me a great outlet) and for all of my fellow Al Anon members for keeping me focused on taking care of myself!  Thanks so so so much!

I don't mean to diminish the difficulty of what you are going through. There are no right answers since you don't want your husband to suffer but also know that he needs to really suffer and hit bottom in order to change. Tough situation for sure.
