The Science of Addiction

I thought you might find this interesting, as every so often it is questioned why alcoholism is considered a disease:

Thanks! That was an informative article. I was especially glad to read about the scientific research documenting how AA/12 step programs work and research on their success rate.

There is long term genetic research that has been done in Europe that has spanned over 60 years...see if you can find that one also.  Was a part of my college course work. smile

Dear Ditto.  I am glad that you posted this article.

I would only add that science is putting a stamp (and rightfully so) on some of the realities of addiction that many of us have empiracly observed for many decades.

Thanks to our technology in the past few years---especially in the field of genetics.

It reminds me of Louis Pasteur, a physician who proposed that disease (infectious) was caused by invisible organisms.  He was called crazy and drummed out of the medical circles that he attended as a disruptive nut.

Not too long after, the microscope was introduced by a Dutch scientist and bacteria were seen for the first time.  Now Louis Pasteur is regarded as the leading pioneer in the field of infectious disease.

Another thought---His wife actually died from an infection because she willingly submitted to being a subject in his lab experiments.  He actually DELIBERATELY exposed her to his lab specimens to see what the result would be!!

Do you think that Louis Pasteur's wife was possibly co-dependent!?? (LOL).

Thanks again, ditto for this interesting post

Sincerely, Otie

It is not news that certain chemicals can be addictive. We know that heroin, cocaine and nicotine can be highly addictive, so why doubt that alcohol can also be addictive for some people?
