Update to "Dealing with Recovery"

I didn't realize that updating a thread wouldn't bump it, so I'm starting a new thread to let you guys know what's transpired.  Just for a refresher, the thread was about ED issues in the recovering alcoholic (specifically my H).

Since I posted, my husband injured his back (for the second time) and had to go to the ER.  They did a CT Scan which showed diffuse demineralization of the bones.  One of the culprits of that is low testosterone so we made an appointment with a Urologist.  The doc ran a new panel and his T levels were VERY low.  Supposedly this was looked at earlier this year, but mysteriously when we called for a copy of the results, they weren't in his file.  I think he never had them run at all because he so believed that his body would simply recover within that two year window.

He's started replacement therapy with weekly injections and we're to go back to the doc in six weeks for a new panel.  They'll check to make sure he's getting the correct dosage.

My H seems very relieved that there's an answer to his issue.  I think that will help alleviate some of the psychological affects that I suspected were forming from it as well.  Not that I'm glad he's injured his back, but I'm glad he was motivated to go get his blood work done.  It could have saved him from much more serious issues in the future.

Since posting, we've just been focusing on quality time and have been really enjoying each other's company.  I "let go" of the issue (per some great advice I got on that thread) and it's really helped my attitude and self esteem with the whole issue.  Now that we KNOW that it's medical, we're both a lot more comfortable with what's going on.

I researched low T and alcohol use and it's common for a binge drinker.  There are so many drawbacks to low T levels, but the main one is an increased risk of heart attack.  I'm so glad that we got this figured out before he suffered anymore damage.

If I could pass on anything that I've learned here it's that alcohol really can damage the body in ways we don't even realize.  It's important to continue to get physicals and lab work to ensure that everything is working as it should.

Thanks to everyone who was so supportive on that thread.  It's so good to know that there are people to talk to about this who understand it.

Dear walkinthrubluebonetts, I am so glad that you posted this update, and that thing are looking up for you two.

Your situation is a difficult one for people to discuss, but all to common.  I know that by posting, you are helping lots of people.  Actually, lots of people read the board for inspiration even though they may not post (yet).

Good job, walkingthrubluebonnets.  See you around.

Sincerely, Otiesmile

Walking,

I remember your original thread.  I am so glad you have more information on the subject and were able to share the update with all of us.  I was also proud of you to have been able to let go of the outcome and enjoy time with your husband.

As Otie said, your update really can be helpful to so many others.  Thank you for posting the rest of the story.

XoXo

tommye
