That our drunks, our alcoholic's are these really great, intelligent, sensitive, talented people. As I read some of the topics and think about the people I know it seems that these type of people are really special, what is it, a mere coincidence or what? Is there any truth in this, can anyone shed some light. Oldergal

Only my opinion here, but yes of course they are cracking people but they just get out of sinc with balance, my character assets can also be my defects if you like, people can manipulate me easily because I never liked to see the bad in a person only the good, everybody to some extent wants what they want, we all go about it in our own way, it's just like words I suppose you can use them to build someone up or pull them down, from what I see here on mip we are the most wonderful kind generous people you could find, and yet we beat ourselves up when we get hurt, we can't understand why that could happen to us, so when that does happen to me I am quite capable of going to the other extreme and being horrid, yep as horrid as any drunk, so I have to learn balance too, it's about bringing out the good, I was thinking, with our animals we just love them, and they love us, if it's a dog with attitude we just accept it, we don't try to change the dog, but with people like me when I am in crisis I am either black or white, when I really need to be grey.
Dear oldergal, I think you are just seeing a select group of people. alcoholism/addiction effects every socioeconomic level, every personality type, every race, young and old. I have witnesses it among the brilliant, accomplished, and specially gifted. It efects the very charming and beguiling as well as those who are coarse, crude, and utterly unsavory.
It is very equal opportunity.
I do agree with you about those here on the board, though.
I think alcoholics are special people as you described. The disease does transcend all levels of society, however the nature of the human being is still there. Once I was able to separate my loved ones from the disease, I could see so many amazing qualities that I had not noticed before.
I have more respect for my alcoholics than I did pre-program, because I accept wholeheartedly that alcoholism is a disease and not a failure of willpower to stop drinking. Because I have the acceptance, I am able to be compassionate and appreciate the good qualities each of the people have. I had no ability to do this pre-program because I was swimming in self-righteous anger and self-pity. It is truly awesome to be able to appreciate that the alcoholics are more than just alcoholics. I think that the difference is very much my perception.
Addiction does not discriminate. The reponses here are priceless!
They may seem special becuz most put on that "tin god" complex thing. They are good at pretending they are special becuz they feel below bugs and worms.

Aloha Oldergal...It is like pulling a tarp back from covering up a piece of art work. When the tarp...disease is gone you get to see the beauty. That happens with the membership in Al-Anon also. As the tarp is being pulled back a Miracle is In Progress. ((((hugs))))
an oldtimmer in AA told me that this is an equal oportunity disease it dosent care who it gets , rich , poor , smart , not so smart . The alcoholic in my life is my husb who has 20 yrs sobriety today ,he has two degrees BCLS-- ClS owned his own business was and is a great provider but could not seem to get a grip on his alcoholism ,he truly didnt think he could live with out alcohol . until faced with loosing his family and drinking himself to death alone he finally decided to stop he says it just got to painful to continue . He has always had the heart of a Boy Scout , always helping other people ,very generous with those he loves .. yep they are nice people alcohol just gets in the road .
