Sponsor/Sponsee relationships

What should you look for in a sponsor, and what makes a good sponsee?

I looked for character assets I lacked; patience, open mindedness, courage; stuff I lacked when I reached the rooms.  I listened to the people in the rooms and listened with my eyes reading their body language so that I could see where the words matched the behavior...initially that was because I had low/no trust issues.

All of my sponsors desired honesty and willingness to follow thru on the recovery process.  They looked for positive change and growth and that is what I was looking for myself.

My sponsorship was great because they allowed me the latitude to work as directed and own the consequences without taking responsibility for the successes and losses themselves.  They helped me construct my own recovery and they supported me when I wanted to go beyond what I had already learned.  They didn't hold me back. One of my sponsor gave me a mantra I still hold on to till today.  "Find and use whatever you can and will to gain and maintain your peace of mind and serenity."

That's important for me to give away today myself.

Good question and I'm listening to what ever comes next.   ((((hugs)))) smile

For me i needed someone who laughed alot and enjoyed life , regardless of what was going on . I had forgotten how to laugh , to enjoy life , I was so obsessed with my husb I had no life of my own . I wanted someone who had stayed in thier marriage as i did not want to leave mine . I didnt choose my sponsor  , she chose me offered her help , phoned to see how i was doing etc .  She did alot of service work and encouraged me to do the same , where ever she went i went .  A good sponsee only has to be willing to change , go to meetings and stay in touch .   If your group goes for coffee go with them its a great way to see how people act outside of a meeting situation . You will find who you need just keep your eyes and ears open .  Louise
