You might remember my brother, who has been in and out of jail for DUI offenses and probation violations related to alcohol.
He was released mid-January, and the first couple of weeks you could hear slurred speech whenever you talked to him on the phone. Sometimes it was sight, others it was severe. Regardless, it's very easy to tell when he has been drinking. All of a sudden, his speech became very clear no matter what time of the day you talked to him, and it appeared as though he was sober over the last 4 weeks. It was like a light switch being turned on.
I talked to him Monday evening around 6:30, and he was fine. In good spirits, "working it one day at a time", etc.
At 8:30 he was hit by a car crossing a three-lane road, and in critical condition. He was walking home from the store with the beer he just bought. Apparently, he had an open beer in one hand, and a 12 pack in the other when he was hit.
He's very lucky to even be alive right now. He broke his leg in two places with the bone sticking out of the skin; 4 broken ribs; a fractured jaw; a broken nose; a fractured eye socket; a 6-inch gash on his head the went to the skull; road rash all over. He's a mess, but they say nothing is life threating at this point.
Sorry, that has to hurt doubly hard, not only the worry over the accident, but the worry over the drinking. One can only hope that the near death experience may end up helping in the recovery he may want as much as you do.
Powerlessness in the extreem. HP is still here and ready to take over when your bother abandons himself completely to his HP. The life threatening part of this share is that it's not an "accident" and "Alcoholism is a life threatening disease" to every extent of the thought. Prayers are going his way and thoughts and hope that he finds "the other way". ((((hugs)))))
Hoping for the best! (It's amazing what the human body can withstand)
