Speaking from my own experience and feelings. I did not choose to have alcohol affect my life the way it has, I do recognize now however that I was an active participant in the progression of the disease. It is because of this that I have the choice to find recovery or claim the role of victim and seek other co dependancies in my life.
I choose who to love, I can choose happiness or I can choose denial and put off facing contraversy. The first line in the serenity prayer is no more or less important then the other two, none of the lines have any real power standing alone, it is in conjuction with each other that the power of the prayer can be recognized.
Understanding what is our choice and what is beyond our choice is part of understanding what we can control and what we can't. Our choices are the action that brings about change, and attempting to apply a choice to something beyond our control is the path to denial.
great share really putting the focus on you. I too am realising the part I have played in my relationship with my alcoholic and there were lots of other people who I rescued and tried to fix with really bad outcomes over the years. Today I am choosing recovery because i know it is all about me and my choices. I rescue people, then I get angrey when they do not appreciate it or repay the favour and then I become the victim WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING TO ME!!! because I chose to do things for people that they did not ask me to do, I chose to give my all and keep nothing for me. The serenity prayer says it all keep the focus on yourself, your choices and hand the rest over.
