Is Al Anon for me?

Hi my name is Sean and I live in Ireland. I have been living with my partner for 16 years, he is a recovering alchohilic, I came from a previous alchoholic relationship.

Although my partner does not currently drink, he has had other addictions (spending, debting) which have dramatically affected my life.

Over the years, I have made excuses for him, worked my way around very dismal situations, none of these in relation to drinking but to his other problems.

We have gotten into terrible financial circumstances, and I am now dealing with my own finances and trying to get back on track. My own financial situation is largely due to my enabling over the years.

I am trying to sort out my responsibilities in the relationship and not get tangled with his as I have done over the years. Although our situation has improved in many ways, I still find it hard to know if I am enableing him sometimes. I need the support of others in similar situations.

Thanks for reading, I look forwarsto all your comments.

Blessings

Sean

The short answer is "yes"! Give a few meetings a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to find others who know your story because they deal with these things too.

Al-anon has saved my life.  It is an amazing program that I personally feel would benefit even people that have not had alcoholism touch their lives.

From what you post it appears to me that Al-anon could be a saving grace to you as well.  The support I have received in my Al-anon family has been something I never would have imagined.

If one wonders if the program would help them....it probably would.  :)

Blessings

Sean - if you cannot find al-anon meetings near to you, there are on-line meetings here - although the different time zone can be problematical (I know as I live in England). The chat room can also be a great source of support.

Just coming in here and venting can help enormously. I have personally found the support to be amazing. Here you will find people who have walked in your shoes and who have experienced the same things as you have.

I do hope you manage to find the right help and support for you.

Love and (((hugs)))
Tish
