Rehab

I don't know if anyone here can help me with some ideas but I figure it's worth a shot. My 26 yo brother has been struggling with alcoholism & drug addiction for almost 10 years now. He's spent time in jail, gone to mandated (aka crappy) rehabs, and been close to death twice. It breaks my heart to see him in so much pain, and have so much rage. Our mom was an addict and left when I was 14 after overdosing (he was 8) and he just blames my parents for all his issues and can't (or won't) try and put his life  together. Tonight, on his 26th bday, my father (who he lives with) had to call the cops because my brother was in one of his drunken rages and breaking everything in the house to pieces. Was hurting himself and experiencing suicidal ideation. We want to do the intervention thing as in "go to rehab or you are on your own" (which my dad should have done a long time ago but yada yada) but my brother has no health insurance. He lives in NY so i looked into healthyny but their benfits don't cover mental health. This whole gov system is a bunch of 'xxxx' I would like my tax dollars to go to american citizens with mental health/drug problems but NOOOOO, it goes to immigrants who go to the ER for every 'xxxx' little thing. Sorry for the vent. Does anyone know good rehabs that have pro bono services or something like that? Or any good decently priced insurance companies? I would appreciate any input...

We have one of these here close to me. Its for men 18 and up. They run a thrift shop here in town. I always listen to them talk about their recovery. So many are doing well in this program. Worth a check into it. Even though it is far away, they may be able to guide you to something closer to ya. love, debilyn

When contacting a Teen Challenge Center for assistance, it is important that the individual who is seeking help contact the intake person. There is an application, as well as other necessary paperwork, and an interview. A health screening is also required. In the event it is determined that the contacted program is not in the best interest of an applicant, a referral will be provided to another program or programs that offer the most effective and appropriate services to the applicant. Teen Challenge would welcome the opportunity to discuss your needs and how we might assist you.

Thanks so much Debilyn. I will let you know if it works out. Even if it's that far, we could swing the airfare :)
Hugs,

Hi and Welcome to MIP
This diease of alcoholism has taken a powerful hold on your loved one.  You know we are powerless of this illness and that since we did not cause it, we cannot control it and cannot cure it.  Your dad and you would benefit by attending face to face alanon meetings in your community.  Here you will learn positive tools to interact with ths disease and how to take care of yourself while being surrounded by this disease and the insanity.

You can find meetings in your community by  going to:the local white pages of the
telephone directoryunder alanon  intergroup.  Call the number and you will receive a list of meetings in your location.

As for your brother there are many fine rehabs that offer scholarships to alcoholics who cannot pay  one that I am familiar with is Veritas Villa in Upstate NY.  I am also familiar with the NY hospital system detox procedures and I know that Staten Island University Hospital has a find safe  professional, caring detox and free rehab to the uninsured.  Bowery Mission and the Salvation army are also free.  If the alcoholic is ready to stop any rehab can help him, if he is not willing to stop the finest rehab will not work.
I am so sorry that your brother is so sick  He will be in my prayers.

I just wanted to say what a great idea you had to post here looking for help.  I know that it is difficult to find places that are reasonable or free.  My husband's first rehab visit was an uninsured one.  He didn't have any mental health coverage.  We paid for it out of pocket.  The amount was greatly reduced because we were willing to make a large payment in full instead of making payments to the hospital forever.  With the second rehab, we got lucky and found a place that his current insurance would cover 70%.  I found that my face to face meeting was a great place to get the names of rehab places.  Also I agree that the person has to be ready for help.  I thought hubby was ready the first time and so did he.  Looking back on it, he wasn't.  He was not ready to be completely honest and make the most of it.  I will be praying for you and your brother.
