Dad in rehab - first steps when he comes home?

Hi,

I'm glad I found this board as it helps to "talk" to others that have been at this point.  My 76 year old father checked into rehab yesterday - they say the average is a 5 day stay.  After that, hopefully, he will attend AA.

I went to Barnes and Noble today to see if I could find books about recovery and assisting family members with their recovery.  I couldn't find anything :(  Do such books exist?  I have looked into Al Anon meetings and will attend those.  This isn't our first go-round, he was sober for 5 years when I was younger.

I'm proud of him for trying and sad that he has to go through this awful addiction and withdrawal.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Lori

Aloha Lori...congradulation on your compassion within the disease of alcoholism and
your willingness to seek help.  Before he comes home go to the white pages of your
local telephone book and look for the hotline number for Al-Anon and call that to
get the meeting places and times in your area.  Call it and get to the first meeting
you can get to.  Look for the literature table and get as much literature that looks
good to you.  You may also pick up a "newcomers" packet of literature for nothing.
Stay for the meeting...listen with an open mind you don't have to talk if you don't
want to and the meeting is free as the program is supported by voluntary donations
of the membership.  There are no leaders or head person...only a membership doing
service to the group.

Come back here and let us know how it worked out for you.  Prayers for you and your
Dad.  (((((hugs))))) smile

Your first step is going to your own program and leave dad to AA they will take care of him and let Al-Anon take care of you and your family , for me this program is the best way to support the efforts of the sober alcoholic , we have to stay out of thier stuff mind our own business and let go of trying to direct thier lives . its never too late to start over . thinking of your family tonite . Welcome to MIP.... I purchased my books on addiction and codependency from Amazon. I have always found every book that I was searching for from them.  There is some great literature out there and so much to learn and understand.
