scratching the surface of step 2?

As I mentioned earlier my wife completed a 30 day.  I have attended a few meetings.  Rationally understanding what I was hearing and honestly trying to state back what I had heard.

I was enjoying a period of calm with my wife hoping for her recovery.  I was completely focused on her, waiting for her to mess up so I could promptly "detach" myself.  As I watched the car (this is an analogy!) get too close to the shoulder for my comfort, I grabbed the wheel from the passenger side, as my life began to spin out of control with my kids in the back seat, I looked at the drivers side expecting to see my wife, but instead it's my HP calmly waiting for me to give back the wheel.

I'm growing, no longer concerned about who I measure up against, but hoping to keep moving forward.

Dad, Mahalo for that great anology.  Spiritual awarenesses like that can and will
save another Al-Anons life from time to time.   I know from my own experience.

Keep coming back and working it like you have been.  The growth is evident.

(((((hugs))))) smile

Dad,

You have the right person behind the wheel, plus he has a perfect driving record. Good anology.

As far a continuing to move forward, it's much easier with HP doing the steering, while you enjoy the ride.

HUGS,
RLC

As I read your posts I am reminded of a time in my life when sobriety was just a dream and I had complained at a meeting about --I really cant remember now hehe after the meeting a lady came up to me and said   , What kind of shape are you going to be in IF he does sober up???  I looked at her like she was nuts him actually getting sober hadn't crossed my mind , I never forgot that so I dived into my program even more and 3 yrs after arriving here he did seek sobriety , and it had nothing to do with me all I had to do was step aside and mind my own business that was 20 yrs ago last sept. I had tried for 10 yrs to reason with this disease and 3 yrs after letting go he is sober - go figure ??

What a great analogy Dad! So glad you can see this so early in your recovery. Your analogy made me think of the great country and western song "Jesus take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood. It has been so true in my own life that when I take the wheel things spin out of control, and when I turn things over to him, things ultimately work out.

Since I "SO" thing in musical terms, this analogy also made me think of the old  1969 rock hit "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum. When I was in the depths of living with my first alcoholic husband, I remember this song playing out the lyrics.. "when I die and they lay me to rest, I'm going to the place that is the best"...as I was rounding a corner on a country road and met a 18-wheeler that was carrying an over-sized load which left me with one place to go...off the road. "Going up to the Spirit in the Sky, that's where I'm gonna go when I die"... I hit the brakes and started a skid I couldn't recover from. The truck spun around backwards and ran off the road stopping in the bar ditch, right side up, by the grace of God. "Prepare yourself, you know it's a must, gotta have a friend in Jesus, so that you know when you die, he's gonna recommend you to the Spirit in the Sky"... with the song still reverberating in my head, the truck driver (who had pulled his truck off the side of the road safely) came running down the road and up to the side of my truck to see if I was ok.

After we both had a little talk in which he apologized and explained that he tried to tell his trucking company that this load was too big to take down this small country road, we parted and I turned my truck around and continued my journey. This gave me a time to think about what I had just experienced and what it meant to me. I realized that my life at the time was much like my truck spinning out of control. I knew I had no control over the events in my life (hence Step 1) and I needed to turn things over the God of my Understanding. This was pre-al-anon for me, but I got the message anyway and eventually God brought me to these wonderful rooms.

Thanks for the analogy Dad! It brought back alot of memories for me!
