My fiance does not know I plan on going to an al anon meeting tonight. I don't think he would take it very well. I'm not sure what to tell him where I am going. Any advice ?
Meetings are great. They last around an hour in my area. Sometimes people linger to talk afterwards. My AHsober has thrown it up in my face: why aren't you learning anything at your meetings? You could start with the literature and get a sense for what Alanon is all about. My AHsober has the misconception that we sat around talking about how to get the alcoholic sober. We share our experience, strength and hope to help us get better.
Sorry to say my fiance is not sober. I'm sure he will be drunk by the time I get home. If I tell him that I went to a meeting it will be an all out war.
We can't tell you what to say. Do what feels comfortable this time. If you can't bear the thought of telling him at this time, don't. As you begin to work on your own recovery, you may find the words you need to tell him.
Aloha Irish...the meeting is about you; for you not for or because of him. You are having a reaction to alcoholism which is a disease. If he's not sober nothing you do for any reason is good enough. Be afraid and go anyway. the meeting is a very good place to take your fear because we all know what that is like ourselves and have solutions.
My alcoholic had a hissy once and never again when she knew that the hissy wasn't strong enough for me to stop going because I really wanted and needed to.
Bring your fear into the room and let the membership handle it with you.
