Preteens need a support group

My husband has just come out of rehab, and things look good so far.  He has been going to meetings, and I have been going to Alanon.  I have two daughters - ages 10 & 12.  I think they are too young for Alateen.  They really need some sort of support group where they can encounter kids in a similar situation.  I haven't been able to find anything apropriate so far hmm

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried the Health Department? I took my kids to a support group of parents and kids when they were  young.

Have you called Al Anon where you live to see if they know of any programs?

Congrats on both you and H going to meetings, makes a whole better chance of you guys having a good life.

hugs,debilyn

I am not aware of anything for the "in between" ages, but I don't think 10 & 12 is necessarily too young.... If you believe it is, then just having some frank discussions with them - maybe sharing applicable stuff you are learning, might help....

There are various "play therapy" tools for much younger kids, but I think your age of children wouldn't get anything out of that, and don't tend to open up much when dealing direct with counsellors...

Hope that helps
Tom

Thanks Debilyn and Tom,

I have checked with Alanon, and Tom - I agree about counselors, they would just clam right up. We have been talking to them, but I feel like they really would benefit from some sort of group thing.

I hadn't thought of the health department. I'll keep researching. When I find something, I'll share the info here for sure!

Does the rehab center that your husband was in have an outpatient group.  When my AH got out of rehab and while he was in rehab my daughters and I attended classes and group meetings. Do they have something like that?

I'm an Alateen sponsor out here in Missouri. If you feel you're 12 year old is mature enough, they might be able to try Alateen. I don't know what state you live in, but in Missouri the minimum age is 12 and the maximum age is 20. In other states, the maximum is 19. There are also some preteen groups out there. Not many though.
