Looking for direction.

Hi there.
Last night my husband and I had a long discussion about his soberity, and Al-anon was mentioned in the mists of it. He suggested that I look into finding my own support group.

So, here I am.

Now what?

Will someone please direct me in where to start?

Welcome!
Start by heading into the chat room here.... always a great bunch hanging out in there even when it is not meeting time and you can start asking your questions there.
Next look up AlAnon in white pages of phone book and call the number and ask when and where are closest meetings to your house and then GO TO THEM!

Keep posting here and reading whatever AlAnon literature you get into your hands.
Its one heck of a journey but oh so worth the ride!

blessings,
adonaisgirl/donna

I am new, just started a few weeks ago. The face to face meetings in real time were where I turned first. Then I got the book COurage to Change. I have been healing more every day. I hope you find a group near you, and keep coming back here, everyone is kind and helpful!
Take care of yoU!

Hello and welcome , your lucky your husb suggested you get to our program a lot of partners do not .  If you call this toll free number on monday from the hrs of 8am to pm uwill find a meeting near you its toll free and international. 1-888-4alanon .
Your life has been affected by someone elses drinking you too need to recover . the alcoholic is not the only one who has to change we do too , we had a part in the active drinking were not to blame but we did have a part in the mess , we can support in a healthy way by having our own program and leaving him to AA .

Basically just working the program will help alot....that may mean different things to different people but you start to:
1. LIve life in a healthier way.
2. Associate with people who will be supportive and uncritical.
3. Learn to take better care of yourself.

You're pretty lucky, as abbyal says, that the suggestion came from your husband.  My two XABFs were really resistant to the idea of me going to Al-Anon, I guess maybe it implied that their recovery was pretty rocky (which it was!).

I started by reading, first on here, then I got a whole pile of conference approved literature.  How Al-Anon Works might be the best one to start with.  But I'm one of those people who needs to have a bit of working knowledge and understanding before I dive into anything; I'm not very brave. smile

I'm glad that I did, because my prep reading introduced me to a lot of the basic concepts of the program, and especially the "language".  So I was less intimidated when I walked into my first face to face meeting, it felt like I had a better grasp of what the members were talking about.

Even though I attend f2f meetings regularly, I get different things from sharing in group and reading on here, so I never stopped coming to MIP.  I process things a little better when I read, but I've gained insights from both venues.
