Tonight I am going to attend my first Al-Anon meeting. I made sure to find a beginners meeting so I don't get too confused. I'm a little anxious about the entire thing, it is going to be held in a church and I am so far from religious it isn't even close.
Now, what I'm interested in finding out is if they are going to press the way of the lord on me, or not. That is my biggest concern.
A friend told me to get the booklet, what ever that means. Do you have any idea what she is talking about?
Anyways, when it comes to these meetings... what should I expect? How do they usually go about them and how long do they run?
The meeting is in 2.5 hours so the sooner replies the better!
There is a great meeting summation near the top of our board, that will give you some idea of what to expect tonight.... I wouldn't be concerned about much "preaching" going on, aside from most meetings closing with the reciting of the Lord's Prayer (you don't have to participate if you don't). What you WILL find is acceptance... and understanding.... and love - from others who have experienced the same, or similar things....
Good luck tonight - hope it is a wonderful experience for you!
Tom

Somebody had written a great overview of what most meetings go like....
Basically you will listen to others share, and then will be given an opportunity to share (if you wish).... Many meetings will have a subject of focus for the meeting - either a step, tradition, or slogan.... Many meetings will also include "step one", seeing as how you are a newcomer there....
I think meetings are awesome, and they do you more good than anything online (we are a good supplement) - the old saying is try six meetings before you make a decision as to whether or not it is for you - if you don't like it, they will gladly refund your misery! :)
Take care Tom

Hi Hailiestar! I hope you enjoyed your meeting! I meant to reply to you the other day after my first meeting...mine went well. I definitely am going back - it was smaller than normal because there was an al-anon convention in town that night - but the people were very kind.
By clicking back to the main page of this message board, you will see a list of "Stickies" and there is a post on Frequently Asked Questions. Hope this helps, and that you found some comfort at your first face to face meeting . :)
