inspiration needed

  • I've been coming here and going to online meetings for a week now. It's been a great help to me, I feel some hope that I can learn to cope with my A's drinking. He got drunk two nights ago for the first time since I discovered al anon. I was able to tell myself that he has a disease, it's not his fault. I refrained from yelling and saying angry words to him. When he passed out on the patio I left him there to wake up on his own and stumble to bed. I still felt sad but much calmer than I always have in the past when he drank. Although this forum and the meetings have been helpful, I want to learn more. I do not have access to al anon literature as there are no libraries or bookstores around here. And even if there were the books would be in Spanish and my Spanish is not that good. It is very expensive to send books (or anything) from the states and the mail system here is unreliable. So I'm asking those of you who have a favorite message from the literature to share it with me.   I know you can't post copyrighted material but maybe you could put into your own words the hope or inspiration you feel from some special piece and share it with me by posting here or by PM. Thanks for the support.

Is there any way you can subscribe to The Forum magazine? Perhaps shipping won't be so bad since it's not very heavy? The Forum has a lot of inspirational stories and I always look forward to receiving it every month.

This month there was a nice story about an al-anon member who went to a biker show where people were selling all sorts of biker merchandise. There was a woman selling badges (I'm assuming to put on their jackets) and this person saw a badge that read "Friend of Lois W." The person only had $15 and wondered if that would be enough money. After standing in line, the person asked the woman if she had any Lois W. badges left and was excited to see that she did. When asked how much it would cost, the woman stood up and said the cost of this badge is a hug. She then said "if you want one of these, then you've been through hell, so you've already paid."

How amazing is that? It just shows the wonderful love and support that this program has to offer.

(((pineapple)))) so pleased you have found this site helpful. It has been a life-line to me as there are no al-anon groups near me.

N8SMom - how do you subscribe to the Forum magazine - and - who is Lois W?

Glad you have found this site.  I found enormous solace from going through the archives of this site.  I think there is a goldmine there.  There are also lots of al anon sites online. Some people blog.

You can find them by doing a google search.  In addition there are yahoo groups and other groups that offer tremendous information and people's counsel and help.

Maresie.

Thanks everyone. Hotrod, that website was very helpful. I've copied the 12 steps, the writing about detachment, the serenity prayer, slogans and excerpts from some of the posts on here. I'm putting together a notebook to be a resource for when I need hope and inspiration when I can't get online.

To a first timer here, you ARE the inspiration!   I'm still working to practice the detachment you've exhibited!

If you want some inspiration, all I can offer:

You did the best you could yesterday.

Wake tomorrow, and enjoy the moment.  Can you smell the sunlight?  If it's raining, can you feel each drop?    These things go on, generation after generation, alcoholic or not, and remind us of the beauty in the world.

Go walk the market, and rejoice in the colors.  Listen to the childrens' happy chatter.  Be happy for what you have- for others will never have it.

Hi there , glad u found some literature to print off and keep handy , that detachment pamphlet changed my life . I started by picking one of the suggestions and working it til I felt comfortable then go on to another , that pamphlet alone kept me busy for 5 months  hehe.  I am sure we have meetings in your country , try going on line and type in Al-Anon Alateen.org , there u could order literature from your own country and most sites offer english speaking .
There is also something you may be interested in its called  THE LONE MEMBER S CLUB .  go to the Al-Anon WSO site shown here on this site and email head office saying that u would like to  be a member of the club and u will start getting letters from people all over the globe .  also if there are contacts in your country they will give u those .  Your doing good . keep commin back .

There is one recording I heard on a CD that was an Al-Anon speaker from Texas who was not only funny but really inspiring, she had it "all together." It can be found at this link at the "Rexark" website:

also, Nancy B is very good, she is here:
http://www.rexark.com/products/nancy-b-at-the-2008-nh-afg-convention
and it looks like this is the newest set from the New Hampshire Al-Anon Convention about a month ago:

My wife and I are going to Mexico for an English speaking convention called Sobriety Under the Sun at the end of this month, and we have gone for the past couple years and found it to be really inspiring, a great location with great people; they take their programs seriously but have a lot of fun with life. There is Al-Anon participation and it's overall a great experience if you can make it or need to "force" yourself to take a little vacation!
Here's the information for that: http://www.aapvconvention.com/

God Bless and Happy New Year everyone!
