I Decorated For Me!

For the past few years, I've done the minimum when it comes to Christmas decorating.  No help from AH, and fewer and fewer people coming by, even his kids.  You know...

Earlier this year, I reconnected with an old friend, who has been through some stuff the last couple of years and come out the other side.  Long story short, she said to me..."decorate -- just do it for yourself.  It will make you feel better."  So today I did.  AH in and out of the house all day, but I did it all.  Probably 25 trips up and down from the basement, dragged the 7.5 foot tree up by myself and put it together myself (he couldn't even do that!).  Did it all - powder room kitchen, family room, living room, foyer -- the works.  Talked to friend at about 75% done -- she said, "put on the Christmas music."  I have tons, and have been playing it for about 3 hours and just rocking out by myself and having the BEST TIME!!.

House looks fabulous, and I am exhausted but happy.  No resentment at having to do it all myself because it did it FOR myself.  And I am really, really glad I did.  It was the best advice I've gotten in a long time, and I guess I was ready to receive it.

good for you! I am glad you have such a good friend to let you know that it is OK to do the decorating & stuff for yourself--especially the music! Doesn't it get you in the Christmas spirit?

that is wonderful. That is really the only reason we should do any of this stuff-- not out of guilt or "shoulds" but because we want it and it makes us happy. And, as u know from life with an A, don't expect someone else 2 do it for you!
I feel this way about a lot of things these days-- from what I cook or if I buy myself something nice. I even started grad school for that same reason.
I hope you get a lot of joy AND empowerment from your decorating experience. Make your own happiness!!

You inspired me to place a 3-ft. tree in my front window for me and my neighbors to enjoy.  Thank you!  I feel a wee bit better for doing it.

It's so great to hear that and I'm glad you did it. It's important to remember the things we enjoy and not let the A take that away from us.
