How do I start helping myself?

I checked out the Al-Anon meeting place in our area and it's far from my place, so I most likely won't be able to attend?  I took a quick look at the title of books for family members of Alcoholics.  Are these books available any where or must I order from this site?

Where do I start?   I've read a few replies that sound like they've been helped but to those who have been helped where did you first start (other than meetings)?

Hello dori

You could check out the meetings in the chatroom there are 2 each day!! I buy my books used from amazon since they are much cheaper and I'm on a budget!!

So many good ones! Paths to recovery I just got and wish I would have gotten it sooner. It talks about the steps in detail and then has questions for you to answer. Alanon for friends and family is great also!

One day at a time and courage to change are also good ones for daily readers! If your parents were A's or are A's Hope for today is a good daily reader!

Keep posting here! If it makes you feel better to post 4 times a day then do it for YOU!!

Read others posts.

Also at times I was afraid to share certain things because I thought it was just me going through it and once I started to share soo many others could relate. I realized no matter what I went through I was never alone!

Aloha Dori...There is a realization in recovery about "Doing the best with what we
have" and "Starting right where you are standing" and more.   You are at the door
of your own recovery and you got there by contacting MIP.   I've been in recovery
since 1979 and have always had the privilege of face to face meetings and
thousands of the membership which have helped to take me apart and reassemble
me in a way I could never have done myself with or without the help of professional
people.   If I had not had the meetings I would have wanted tools like MIP and the
heart and love of John to build it and bring it here.  Mellisa spoke of literature and
how she gets it less expensively than others.   Al-Anon conference approved
literature is a safety net for me and it is also put together  by and with the fellow
ship.  Getting a willing supportive sponsor is life saving and helps the recovery
journey take less time often because all of us are tapped into the rest of the
membership with great recovery.  If we exercise humilty and willingness and
follow the suggestions of others we will get our life back and then have it in
a manner beyond our wildest expectations.

I am in support of your need to start helping yourself.  If you have the hotline
number for meetings in your area you can call for members who might be alot
closer to you than you think.   "It all depends on me and I don't have to do it
alone."    (((((hugs))))) smile

Welcome Dori,

Just keep coming back here. Thats a good start.

You can order literature here or look for a local literature center to order from. Call the contact number for your local meeting and ask where they order from. Ask for the number for your area literature person. Also the meeting may have books for sale. You may be able to find a ride from somebody who lives near you, and you can get phone numbers of people to talk to near you.

Your local area may have a web site or an email address where you can get more local info about meetings, too.

Also go to the World Service Office web site at www.al-anon.alateen.org
You can read excerpts from books and find other info there.

In recovery,

Reading "Getting Them Sober", volume one, written by Toby Rice Drews - will give you an awesome start......  I'm giving them away - free of charge - available for the asking....  I'd also encourage you to challenge your own statement about the meetings being "too far away" - they may, in fact, be your lifeline to your recovery right now....  you may find them well worth the effort....

Keep coming back....  you can find tons of great literature out there, including online....  There is no shortage of information available to you...

Take care
Tom

You can go to online meetings here. They are great.  I know it is pretty uphill to download all the software but I do recommend them.

I would also suggest reading Getting them Sober.

Maresie.
