I'm New

I am new to this, and everyone else seems to know all the language and the processes and the way to do stuff?  How do you learn, and how do you get started?

Welcome Holly!

How to get started is going to meetings!

You could purchase some Alanon literature!

Listen and share with others!

And remember progress not perfection. It took how long to get where you are? it's not going to get fixed overnight. it's a life long process.

Melissa

Aloha Holly!!  Welcome there has been a seat waiting for you for a while now and it
is your turn to listen and learn.   How have we done it?   It was suggested that we
listen and take suggestions, learn and practice with courage and keep coming back.
The suggestions have always been find where the face to face meetings of the
Al-Anon Family Groups are in your area (you can find them on the link on the face
page to MIP or going to AFGWSO.org and go to "find meetings").  Get as much
literature as you can about alcoholism and read it all.   Go to as many meetings
as you can over the next 90 days (That is what was suggested for me).  Learn
the 12 steps, 12 traditions of the program, the slogans and serenity prayer and
work on finding a Higher Power greater than yourself.   You will learn why in a short
time.   Another important suggestion is "Keep coming back".   On MIP you get to
lurk or stalk the forum/board and read all you like without saying a thing and then
you have already announced and found yourself welcomed.

If you have or are suffering at the hands of alcoholism you are qualified to be with
those who also have and have found a way out of the mess it has left us in.

Keep coming back...In support (((((hugs))))) smile

Holly, I'm also new to this. Along with the above information, I found the frequently asked questions were helpful. One answers the question about the abbreviations used. Keep coming back!

 http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/meetings/meeting.html            Or call: 1-888-4alanon

We also have meetings here in our chat room. Sometimes it helps to go to those and to your face to face meetings. Gives you a chance to know what to expect at your face to face.

Some are too shy to go to the f2f. Believe me they want you there. We all start nervous!

I kept coming her a lot. Read a whole bunch of the messages here and the comments. Found I was not alone. That almost everyone had the same experiences.

I hope you will keep coming back. Al Anon skills changed my life in so many ways.

I never regret coming here. welcome, love, debilyn

Well we begin where we are.  i went to chat meetings in the rooms here and peope were incredibly kind to me.  I still feel like a beginner after many years some days. At the same time the program does grow on you eventually if you are around it enough some of the slogans, steps, suggestions start to take some force in your life.  Welcome I am so glad you are giving al anon a chance.

Maresie.

Thank you all! I did go to my first f2f meeting today. It took me a long time to get out of the car and walk in the door, but I did get out of the car and go in. I was terrified, and I cried the whole time I was there, but I stayed the whole meeting, and I listened. Maybe next time I will be able to breathe during the meeting. :)
