My son will be in rehab 1 week tomorrow. He seems really good when I talk to him. He has been voted to be the community director (the go to guy as he called it) because he can get along with everyone. Last night a councelor ask him if he would be a guest speaker for guys who come in for only the weekend. I was surprised to hear that he said yes. He wants him to tell his whole story from the beginning. I am sure that that will be a big turning point for him. He would never even share before if he did go to a meeting.
I just keep looking up and am feeling a little proud.
Aloha Gailey...Our alcoholics are so darling doing even the necessary things that keep them alive and at the same time getting praises and positions of power while suffering with a lift threatening disease that is driven by pride and ego. He's the "Go to guy" for newcomers and others all that in a weeks time. Be grateful that he has had sometime without the chemical and don't loose any respect for how cunning, powerful and baffling this disease is.
I've worked in a major Recovery Program before; inpatient and outpatient. I worked it with alot of hope and still do program that way. I don't let go of the reality of the disease. It is always looking for an opening and can get to and thru that opening without anyone suspecting it until later.
Focus on your own recovery. In support. (((((hugs)))))
Do you have Getting Them Sober. I would highly recommend getting it. I think it will give you a great boilerplate on what to expect and how to set boundaries.
Thanks so much for sharing the good news about his progress.
I know that you are doing those Next Right Things by letting him walk his own path and by sharing this you are just being positive in the good things and not just sharing the negative with us!!
You are an awesome Mom and I know he is grateful to have you!!
Keep doing the wonderful things that you are in your recovery!!!
Prayers for him and for you!! Love ya, Rita
