The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
I mean like "Put down the magnifying glass and pick up the mirror."
That one struck me because I have a real tendency to read the ODAAT with a mindset of what my brother could learn from a reading in dealing with his wife and kids. It takes a bit for me to stop and look at how the reading applies to me!
Actually, I have come to realize my brothers flaws are often just exaggerated versions of my flaws. So I am using that to turn my critizism of him into examination of myself.
I am especially interested on slogans for setting and keeping boundries.

The one I have been using the most lately is: It is what it is. Yesterday my counselor added to it, she told me I was saying part of a mantra some people use in medittion. "It is what it is, it is the way."
The other one I have been using is short, simple, and to the point. "Shutup" now this is not a work I normally would say to anyone, and my kids know it as one of a few "S" words they are not to say. I say it to me though because my mouth gets me into so much trouble. When I feel the urge to say something I have been telling myself to Shutup, and the cool thing is I listen to me.
My sponsor has said a lot to me lately when one door closes another opens. It reminds me to not look behind me, but to keep my eyes forward.
And the last one I have been telling myself lately is "shoot the dang hamster" When I start obsessing and can't let go...I tell myself OK Mandy shoot the dang hamster already. I can usually get myself to laugh and then move on.
I don't know if any of these will help anyone else..they work for me and have a bit of humor for me...which ALWAYS helps.
Yours in recovery, Mandy

If you are looking in the past or the future, you're not living in the now.
The present is a gift. The gift is now. Live for today. Live for each and every new moment.
Be gentle with yourself.Fight for yourself, you are worth it, if you dont who will? Those are a few I really like. Perhaps the guidelines for setting boundaries will help u as well, I know they have helped me.
6 GUIDELINES FOR SETTING BOUNDARIES
HAVE CLEARLY DEFINED EXPECTATIONS.
CLEARLY DEFINED CONSEQUENCES THAT DONT DISRUPT YOUR SERENITY.
SET THEM CLEARLY.
COMMUNICATE THEM THEMCLEARLY.
ENFORCE THEM CONSISTENTLY.
WITHOUT REGARD FOR THE RELATIONSHIP (RELEASE ANY EXPECTATIONS ABOUT THE OUTCOME).

SmartKat: I mentioned one just yesterday that my husband told me years ago! MY ARMS ARE TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD! What that means to me is that I have to remember not to get angry & try to fight with God. He is the one who I need to fight with the least! Kathleen--another smart Kat!
Every day my favorite is this one. I don't know where I picked it up or who I should credit with writing it. I've have it taped to my monitor for the last couple years.
