Hosting a conference speaker

I am hosting a conference speaker this weekend.  Any bits of wisdom to make it a success besides just follow her lead as to her needs if any?

I plan to take her to dinner on Friday night and lunch on Saturday after she speaks.

I have never met her before but have talked with her on the phone.

ESH will be appreciated.

Is she staying at a hotel Friday nite?

Sometimes the committee will provide a gift basket for the speakers - but also another good thing to do is see if there is anything special she would like in her room for a late nite snack - or early morning tea/hot cocoa (not everyone is a coffee drinker)

If you wanna do something a little special to help her feel right at home, such as a little welcoming gift - maybe a little candle for her hotel room or small room freshener - just to give it a homey feel to it.

(nothing too big in case she is flying back home??)

Ya know just that little touch can mean a lot to someone who is "away" from home.

It was a nice touch that someone did for me when I went to speak at a convention!!!

Hey and THANKS for the service work - that is what keeps Al-Anon working!!!
Enjoy the conference!!

I think you will do fine. Just remember to be yourself and show her the love you have had from the program.

In recovery,

Scarey and funny for me Mo.   I once hosted a conference speaker and forgot my
humility at home.  Should have forgotten my ego and packed the humility.  I just
went dumb and wanted to impress.  I should have been the one to be impressed
after I got the lead on her but oooooh nooooo I needed to shine and then like
always when the student is ready the teacher arrives and I got the lesson and
lovingly sent on my way.  Not very long (about 30 feet) after I was sent on my
way to prepare the stage for her talk, I GOT THE MESSAGE and then I got pissed
cause my ego and pride were bruised.   It was one of the most necessary
messages of all that I have gotten in Al-Anon.  She told me, "My sponsor told me
that I would never grow in the program unless I got humble."   I got the message
30 feet after leaving her hotel room and I also got why she mentioned it to me
and I never forgot it.   My program definition of humility is "Being Teachable".

So stay humble and keep it quiet and simple because after all it is she who has
been invited to speak.

Good luck, Stay Happy, Have a Great Convention and Keep coming back.

(((((Hugs to you and your Guest)))) smile

ps..if it's Donna from Tex and she can go from small to tall in an instant.  I've got
a massive hug for her.

Thank you all so very much for your input.  I'm certain that things will go just fine if I remember to take my HP with me and leave my ego at home.  smile.gif

RE: Hosting a conference speaker-UPDATE

This is a wonderful conferance with a lot of great speakers.

The speaker I hosted is one awesome person with more years in program than I will ever obtain.

She loved the candle I picked out.  The one I got for her was a jar candle that came in it's own decorated box.  It will be perfectly fine to transport back home with her.

The meeting went great and they tell me I did a wonderful job but there is no way I could tell you anything I said.  I just talked with my HP and we worked it out, he gave me the words and they just came out like they were supposed to.

Now that I have some quiet time it's time to talk to the HP again and tell him how much I appreciate his help.
