I'm new to alanon and don't understand it yet but know I need help in this department. I grew up in a alcoholic home, had problems with alcohol myself and really struggling to learn how to deal with others. I came from a large family and still deal with a sister that is still drinking and causing alot of havoc in the family. It's really hard for me to stay focused on myself and quit obsessing about her. I'm so grateful I found this site and can learn from all of you here...it is such a blessing. I'm a 55 year old grandma that could really use an alanon friend.
you have found a lot of friends right here. You don't have to be alone anymore. I know what it's like to deal with someone's drinking. I still struggle even though my bf quit drinking over a year ago. There are a lot of issues that come along with drinking.
Things got easier for me with the help of alanon. The support here is great.
Welcome home. Glad you are here. Take a moment to find a face to face meeting you can attend in your area. Get your hands on as much literature as you can and begin finding solutions to the issues you are dealing with today. Alanon is available all over the world, your white pages will have a listing. Keep coming back.
Welcome! And you are certainly on the right track on seeking out a sponsor. I don't know that I'd be making the progress I've made without a sponsor. She's the one person who gets to know the WHOLE story, and she's the one person I trust to call with my problems and also the one person who I know can gently point it out to me when I'm being unreasonable about things.
I'd encourage you to find a sponsor you can have in-person.
When I started looking for a sponsor, I just made a few of my own "requirements" (and these are personal requirements for me only... there's no "rule" on who you're supposed to choose as a sponsor).
I wanted her to be someone who's been in the program for a while and has worked all 12 steps with her own sponsor. She also had to still have her own sponsor. And most importantly, I kept an eye out and made sure to choose someone who emulates the peace and serenity that I wish for myself.
It's been a wonderful experience and I feel so blessed to have a sponsor in my life.
