Reference material/links on what happens next

My brother is now in "end stage cirrhosis".   The hospital visits for his girlfriend and my mom are exhausting and horrible.  I've only visited once since I live out of town.

I'm looking for a book/article to help me understand what is next.  Any suggestions?

This site is helpful.

I can tell you from experience.

The patient becomes more and more confused. The poisons/wastes in our body are not being filtered by the liver anymore, from our blood. As this happens the brain begins to die and does not function properly. So all organs are compromised.

They begin dieing. The patient becomes steadly worse, ie going into deep sleep then to coma, no longer making sense at all.

Then the body begins bleeding out of ever iv, where the patient got shots, anywhere as the body no longer can replace platelets, these are what clot and stop bleeding.

I would think also it would completely depend on the patients own body.

If they had had a heart attack before or brain surgery and/or something was already compromised the last stage could make very different turns as their condition.

Many times the bleeding cannot be stopped so they are no longer eligible for a transplant surgery.

I am so sad for you all. I hope someone can be with him at all times. We don't know how much they know.

I held my bil, larry and whispered in his ear at the last few minutes. Up to then I was still teasing him and reading his Bible and mine to him. I was proving that my Bible said the same as his! Didn't want to when I saw him again, hear him griping I had read my Bible! haha

The thing too is,usually they don't feel any pain. I have been thru many deaths with people I love, so far none have had pain.

sending you my love, and also I just searched end stage liver cirrohsis.

love, glad you came here, debilyn

Aloha Debbie...If feel sad with you and with your brother.  I have lost family
members to the disease of alcoholism and addiction, not all of them he users.
I have also stood bedside with others and prayed with them before they
reached that end stage.  Alcoholism is a fatal disease.  It is progressive and if
the alcoholic doesn't arrest the disease in themselves it will progress into insanity
and death.  This is the point we are with your brother.  Alcohol is a solvent chemical
and will disolve the operation and condition of many body parts.  When these vital
parts are gone the person leaves also.  I have found that the most usual personal
perception and behavior I can have with an end stage alcoholic is understanding
of the condition and acceptance of it.   I believe that what also helps me to go thru
the confusing emotions is found in the suggestion of "Abandon yourself to God as
you understand God..."  It's the living who are left the deep troubles if they are
without some way of understanding the process and the disease.

You will find much help at open Al-Anon and AA meetings.   It is in the groups
where you meet the people who truely understand what is going on with you
because they have be or are in that situation also.  The Al-Anon meetings are
also prime places to find literature which brings understanding and helps to
build acceptance even against  the natural resistance to another persons avoidable
death.  Besides the awareness and understanding you will find comfort from these
others just as you will on MIP.   I hope you keep coming back.  I hope you call the
hotline number for Al-Anon in your area and come sit with family and listen to
how it was for us, what we learned and what happens after.

You and your brother and family are in my prayers.     (((((hugs))))) smile

Thanks for your honest, but sad response. I pray for all going through this.

This site has been very helpful during this whole ordeal.

Thanks all.

I think Toby Rice Drew (who has a website ) can help a lot.  In addition there are many many people on this board who have lost loved ones to this disease.  You can rest assured there are people here who can empathize and understand what you are going through.

Maresie.

Anyone know how to stop the diarrhea? He'd already had the diarrhea for 3 days before he came to the hospital and of course they have him on lactulose. He's had diarrhea every day for 10 days now and pretty much every hour. He can't eat anything because it goes straight through. They have him on a low salt, low protein diet, but if you don't put any thing in, and what you do put in, comes right back out, how can you build up strength to go home? All he's done is loose more weight in the hospital. He's not handling this well. Especially the diarrhea and lack of sleep. Doesn't he need some nutrition? Shouldn't they do something to get the nutrition to stay in?
