July 7th reading from One Day At A Time in Al-Anon

What's so important about being right? Why do we complicate our lives and aggravate our difficulties by insisting our views be accepted?

This is a good reading for me today. "What's so important about being right?" anyway? In the past I always had to be "right" it really bothered me if I was proven to be wrong, or just thought of as "wrong". I guess my self-esteem somehow came from proving that I was "right" in some way.

Today I can say "you may be right" and let it go. I don't have to be "right" all the time either. I am not perfect. I am not God. There is only one that is always right, and that is my HP, whom I chose to call God. I can rely on Him for answers and not have to judge my A.

Thank God for this program and thanks debilyn for asking me to post these daily readings. It has helped me to really "think" through each one every day.

Yours in Recovery,

Overcome

I want to say thanks for posting these. Sometimes just getting another perspective on a reading is helpful in this journey.

I also want to say thanks for posting these - I seem to have lost my book.

Your all very welcome, but the thanks really goes to debilyn, one of our moderators, who thought having some literature on the board would "make it a more alanon home to have" with the literature postings. Glad my service could be of help to anyone. It's been the most help to me for every day I get the privilege of posting these readings.

Thanks,
Overcome

There seems to be a common theme in my daily readers this morning. I have Courage to Change at home, and One Day At A Time In Al-Anon in my desk at work... and both have this sort of message of needing to try to be okay with not being right all the time.

That is definitely a huge challenge with me. I can definitely think I know it all... and I can be pretty quick to point out my AH's absurdities to him when I'm so very sure I'm "right". I definitely do not like it when he disagrees with my point of view. (Of course, the manner in which he disagrees could play a small part in it as well - extremely defensively - but then I also have to say for myself "those who spot it, got it!").

In any case, something for me to try to watch today. If I'm finding myself disagreeing with someone, can I just drop it and let it go? Let them have their "truth" even if I think it's off-base? Can I keep my mouth shut? Can I detach from the disagreement with love?

One of my goals I had made for myself around the beginning of the year was "be okay with being wrong". In the grand scheme of things, being wrong doesn't make me less of a person.

Hi (((Overcome)))

I am worried about your posting of the daily readings out of copyrighted literature.

While I fully understand your doing this out of wanting to be of service to your fellow members it is not allowed by the WSO to post their copyrighted material without their permission electronically on the internet.  With written permission, you may post small excerpts from their copyrighted materials, but never substantial passenges, such as a full daily reading out of one of our daily readers.

I am sure you understand that literature sales is the primary source of income which allows the WSO to continue to be of service to Al-Anon members world wide.

It states in the Al-Anon/Alateen service manual that "The WSO does not grant permission for substantial reprints of CAL".

It further states that "Whenever a violation of copyright comes to the attention of the Board of Trustees, it is the responsibility of the Board, through its duly appointed representative, to notify the violator.  This is necessary to avoid the invalidation of the copyright".  In short that reads to me that if they don't try to stop those from violating the copyright then the copyright will become invalid.  The WSO...who is us..Al-Anon...would then lose the rights to the material...and the potential income it generates.  Which as stated above, would be very detrimental to Al-Anon's efforts to support each other world wide.

With all due respect to Debilyn or any of the other moderators, no one here at MIP has the authority to "allow" the posting of copyrighted material.  And by the way that is not just CAL either...thats ANY copyrighted material.

I do not mean to offend you or anyone.  I am just concerned.  I also feel it is my duty to try to point out when I think something that is potentially harmful to this sight is going on.

I don't want to lose this place.  And I don't want to potentially hurt Al-Anon as a whole either by depriving it of resources.

I have been hoping for days that one of the moderators would address this issue so that I wouldn't have too wink but I realized today that it is just as much my responsibility as theirs to help to protect this place and my program.

Please know I point all this out with nothing but kindness and concern.

Yours in Recovery,
David

I believe that I read in the Forum that we should feel free to reprint any articles from the forum with proper citation such as author, volume number page number etc. Correct me if I am wrong. I will try to find the Forum I read that in...
