Don't be concerned about the keys. Just disable the vehicle. The older vehicles you can just take the distributor cap off.
If the car is not locked, open the hood and undo what the dealer tells you to to disable the car. Find out ahead of time. Also find out if you can disable it if you cannot open the hood.
It is sort of a way to take care of YOU so you don't have to even have it on your mind. They are not going to know you had been out there disabling the car or?
hugs, debilyn who just went out and let the air our of two tires. Just stick a little rock in the thingy that holds it in.
I also take the distributor cap off, or take the rotor.
Hey Debilyn, I am a "shade tree" car mechanic too...
I used to shut down my mother, by popping the hood and removing a spark plug wire off the spark plug just enough so she could not see what was wrong, however there would be no ignition........car would not start....she was smart, i had to be smarter....in the older cars one could crawl underneath and take wires off starter motor.....did that to her too.....newer ones, i think I would just detach a few spark plug wires.....
also i would loosen the battery cable enough for car not to get any juice....she never got that either...i would lie and tell her "oh hey, i saw the dome light on last night.....gee, i meant to shut the door tightly but forgot........
she finally got tired of her unreliable car and got a bike....hid it too....a drunk will find a way...taxi's , bikes, hitch hiking....she did it all....
what worked the best was for me to open the front door and tell her to drag her butt to the liquor store and put us all in our misery b/c that would be the end result anyway...i just quit fighting her.........if she wanted to get drunk???? i let her go.......i just got tired of fighting it.....
Diva I wish it were that simple. From experience, the guys I knew kept keys in pocket.
Plus I am talking when you have a belligerant drunk there is no way keys should be mentioned.
So many bar fights are over keys.
Also this one guy came to my house, very old friend. Asked if he could stay over. I said no way. Then he leaves then comes back to door. Says he left his keys in the truck. I go out to check, yep he did.
So I am trying to get it open but it is a newer one. He says oh just a minute here re my other ones in my pocket. Turkey was just trying to get me to let him stay.
So he did give me the keys, as I told him I was going to slash his tires if he didn't. He was a very easy going drunk. I took him to his aunts, gave her the keys.
As he got out and I "walked" home,it was Halloween with kids all over, he said something, and I said B some of us grew up.
Next time I saw him a year or so later, he was embarrassed and told me he was sorry. He had been clean since that night, in AA. so cool. He was a graduate in teaching, and at that time had a great forestry job, going up into the mountains checking water quaity.
I have great faith he is one of the ones who stays in recovery. He never had a dui or wrecked or anything. He was a cool guy. Would drive his truck to the snow and get out and ski where ever.
Anyway it is better to keep it simple, as far as disabling then you can fix it quick the next day.
To me it is no different than hiding the guns, like some have to.
