During my last two years with the ex A he had two major health issues. At some points he embraced the idea of getting better wholeheartedly. Nevertheless when he was depressed he would schuttle everything and I'm sure taking drugs made him much worse. Needless to say he also didn't give up smoking or do any of the other things that would help. He always demanded all the right foods, the right things for himself without any regard for me. If I had a health issue it was always minimized (I ended up hospitalized for two different ailments during the time we were together).
These days I am spending my time trying to get my health better. Today I went for blood work and discovered my total cholesterol is a bit high. I've got other issues which mean a total diet overhaul. I know whatever happens I need to make my life better in order to move on and make a better life for myself. Right now I feel like I'm at the bottom of a huge mountain (and really my health issues are not that big but they do require a lot of change). I'm excited I'm willing to address this stuff because I know a lot of my self worth is tied up in how I treat myself.
I also know I can no longer drown myself in others.
Here's to a better life and a steep learning curve on how to get healthy.
When we're living with the alcoholic sometimes all we can see is their disease and how it is effecting their health and neglect our own well-being. In al-anon I learned to start to focus on me and take care of my needs and issues too. In my current case my alcoholic doesn't take care of his health needs, doesn't have any insurance to pay for anything and doesn't have a job to pay for these things. These are his problems for we are seperated and he is living with his son now and it's easier to detach from his issues.
I on the other hand have always been underweight and when a crisis happened I would lose more weight, and I never thought it a problem like weight gain. But it was a problem and I should have taken better care of myself during those times. Now I am on medication that has caused me to gain weight. I am 5 foot 10 inches and used to weigh 125 pounds. Over the last year I have gained 75 pounds and weigh 200 pounds. The doctors don't seem to be the least bit concerned about this but it concerns me so I'm going to try to get in some exercise and start watching what I eat. It's hard when my family wants to eat differntly than me, but I guess that's just a bridge we're going to have to cross.
Good luck with your diet overhaul maresie, I know mine needs one!

You really said a mouthful right there! I have been self destructive most of my life, so on my quest to find balance in my life, it is most challenging when it comes to basic diet & lifestyle. I hope to lose weight carefully, slowly & healthfully and even this pulls at my regular impatient & perfectionistic ingrained ways.
I have started by adding more water & not eating past 8pm anymore. That was difficult for a few days but it's easy now. I keep starting & stopping working out b/c something had come up with my back & blah blah, still not there.
Today is a new day & I will at least stretch today, even if I dont get on the weight machine.
I am thinking about implementing a diet journal, as I write down my work out activities, I know my mom always lost weight successfully this way & experts say it is very effective as well.
Good for you for deciding to change your diet. This too seems impossible at first but after a few days or weeks, it adjusts & your tastebuds adjust and it gets easier.
Kudos for making yourself your new priority, I hope I can get healthier, gently too.
