What to Expect at Your First Al-Anon Meeting

Friends, in my non-anonymous life I have been blessed with success as a freelance journalist.  Most of my writing is bread-and-butter non-fiction (yawn) such as newspaper articles, etc.

But once in a while I get an opportunity to write about what I love.  One such article I wrote recently is about a typical Al-Anon meeting, and I'm putting a link to it here in hopes that some will benefit from the information.

http://substance-abuse-recovery.suite101.com/article.cfm/what_to_expect_at_your_first_alanon_meeting

Please feel free to comment on it, either here or on the other page.

Thanks Marie

It is a great article. Knowing what to expect before attending a first meeting really helps to relieve anxiety;

Thanks for sharing

I agree with the other comments - it's a nice article, helping newcomers feel comfortable with the idea of Al-Anon meetings, which can be pretty intimidating in that "fear of the unknown" concept.

Thanks for posting this, and I have put it as a "sticky" at the top of the board.

Well said, Gran. That should be very helpful to newcomers or those who as yet have been too timid to take the step to alanon . Thank you for sharing.

OH NO!

Now the moderator cops are gonna get me! smile.gif

I was just realizing that this should have been posted elsewhere since you are using quick replies for what is suppose to be a "sticky".

Please feel free to delete it or move it to another section of the message board.

Wonderful article/share. Now I only have to find a meeting because all of my other questions have been answered. I feel empowered now with that information.

Yours in recovery,

Ty gran for this post. I have been with my A for 6 years. I have gone to 1 meeting in my area, I must say i was very nervous and unsure, it does help alot, and i must confess i didnt go back, being a single mom, it isnt easy . And i had forgotten about what to expect in an al-anon meeting, thanks so much for the reminder, I plan on attending one when i can, my schedule  is every changing, I work in the home care field, my hours can change at anytime. i'm usually working when there is a meeting, but will try and make it to one soon, i hope. thanks so much,

God Bless, have a great day

Just wanted to pop in here again and thank everybody for the encouraging feedback. Some days I need to read my own articles. LOL. Not this one so much (I have 12 years in the program and have been to hundreds of meetings), but today I'm feeling out of sorts and grouchy and I need to go over to another board and get some serenity!!!

For me, this is definitely the way to get serenity! Thanks again for all the nice comments.
