a lesson in forgiveness...

"If the only prayer you say in your life is 'Thank you,' that would suffice."
- Meister Eckart

This was the quote on the program passed out at the funeral I went to yesterday for a 22 yr old who was killed by 18 yr old drunk driver. The guy went through a red light at 70 mph. He walked away from the accident (into jail), his passenger is in critical condition, and the passeger of the victim had injuries, and has been released from the hospital.

The young man who was killed was a college student, an artist and musician. His parents are of the same nature, intelligent, peaceful, artistic, and very kind. There were hundreds of people in attendance.

The newspaper article of the accident spoke of how they forgave the driver, and how thier son would want the same. They told my friend, "there is no other way". At the mass, they included the driver in the prayers, asking that he heal physically, emotionally and spiritually. For a Catholic mass, it was quite uplifting. The young people in attendance kept beat to the hymns with clapping and drumming on the pews smile I did not cry until the end of the service when the parents led the procession out of the church. The father held a piece of his son's artwork and did a little skipping dance, and his mother smiled and walked upbeat.

I know they are devastated, but what a lesson they gave to so many. I am glad I went. I was able to hug them and express my support, and there certainly was a message to me too.

At the reception they passed out a little memory card which read, "We cannot direct the wind but we can adjust the sails". The tribute to their child certanly spoke to that.

Blessings,

Lou

Mahalo Lou...I'm glad you went so that you could come back and pass on the ESH
you got there.  That reminds me that I still have practice to do in the area of
accepting my powerlessness, forgiveness and comforting others who I journey
with.  ((((hugs)))) smile

(((((((((((Lou)))))))))))))))),

I am sorry for your loss.  It's so hard to make sense for the loss of someone so young.

Thank you and to the family for sharing those little "gold recovery nuggets" that I will take with me into my day today.
