New member needs advice

I am married to a man who was on the wagon for 25 years, but due to retirement started drinking again.   He is 69 and although been to 3 AA meetings, he is still drinking steadily, and I do not believe he is serious about stopping, or has not the willpower.  We have been married six years.  He denies that he is drinking, even when I see him taking nips from the desk beside his chair.  He has bottles of Vodka hidden around the hosue, but he denies, denies, denies he is drinking.  I don't want to go out in the car with him if he has been drinking, but it is useless as he lies that he hasn't and then I know that he has.  My question is how do I treat him?  I am prepared to leave him if he does not stop, although I have never told him so.  I cannot go to Al Alon Meetings as we live in an isolated village and unfortunately, the meetings are not the same night as the AA of which he has to drive twenty five miles to attend.  I would love some advice on what is taught at Al Alon as cannot find too much on the net.  I know that I should detach myself from him and not coddle him or make excuses for his behabiour.  Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to MIP - hate that you have been affected by someone's drinking but glad you are reaching out for help.

Please keep reading here and posting your comments - thru that I know that I have found lots of love & support.

If you can't attend meetings can you order some of the books thru the internet? Some of my favorites of "How Al-Anon Works for Families & Friends of Alcoholics" "Courage to Change" and "Paths to Recovery"

There are other books that a few have mentioned before that are good also "Getting them sober" can't remember some the others - I'm sure some of our other members will be on-line soon to give some other suggestions.

Don't give up til the miracles happen in you - You deserve them.

Remember it's ok to do what is best for YOU!!

HUGS,
Rita

Glad you're here - this is a great place. I have a hard time getting to face to face (f2f) meetings myself, so I attend the online meetings. They are truly the next best thing for me.

The online meeting schedule is at http://www.12stepforums.net/alanon.html.

This message board is also a gold mine. Whether I'm posting my own thoughts or simply reading what others post, I usually find something I need to "hear".

Keep coming back!

Welcome to MIP

There is a link to books at the top of this page. (upper left hand corner). You can also get information at face to face meetings.

I am so glad you found this wonderful place. It has been such a blessing to me. Post when ever you need to, and go to the chat room if you want. There are alot of us on this bumpy road to recovery. We can help each other get there.
