Our last business meeting for Miracles in Progress was on doing service but this applies broadly to any type of service be it on the message board (replying to posts, posting thought-provoking posts, sharing your experience, strength and hope) or be it in the chat room (showing up for meetings, chairing meetings, sharing your experience, strength and hope) or in your face to face groups (setting up for meetings, cleaning up afterwards, literature person, treasurer, secretary, sponsoring, etc).
And so I found some humor the other day when I was asked by the college that I just graduated from if I would be willing to volunteer to do a photo shoot for the colleges website virtual tour.Look out Julia Roberts
Working fulltime, going to college nights, having a family, forget about a personal life , sometimes I forget that I really do a lot, especially for the things I believe in. My three boys are first and foremost in my life. I stop and drop whatever I am doing when my boys need anything from me.Alanon is another huge priority in my life.Alanon was there for me when I was at the depths of despair, and I want to continue on the gift that was given to me.Work comes next (I need money to live) and college (so I can make more $) is also a priority.
So while they were setting up for my photo shoot, they were asking me questions to warm me up and help me relax to be as natural as I could be during the photo shoot. They were amazed at what I had done just that day alone (was at work by 7:00 a.m., left work early to attend photo shoot an hour away from work and was heading back into the city another hour and a ½ away for a concert that night).I laughed at their amazement and told them that I've heard it said so often that if you need someones help for any type of civic duty and/or service work, "ask a busy person." We busy folks somehow find a way to do things. So when they asked me to do the photo shoot, I agreed because the college was very good to me in innumerable ways and I wanted to give back.
We also learn in Alanon that when we get busy, we get better. It takes us out of our own situation that seems hopeless at the time and gives us something of a positive nature to focus on and, voila, we begin to feel better.
Indebted to Alanon always and in service, Maria
