A Poem for you....

I read this poem again recently, and it reminded me of the hurdles we all face in our programs and our lives with alcoholism. Just wanted to share with everyone......

"I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings"

~Maya Angelou

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and is tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Cabecka,

What a beautiful poem.  For me, this is a wonderful metaphor for how I've created an invisible cage around myself that's kept me from experiencing the freedom to live my life to it's fullest.  I am so grateful to Alanon for showing me how to change my perspectives and break away from my own debilitating "prison".  Little by little, I've learned to face the fears, insecurities, inadequacies and control issues that kept me in my own personal cage.  Today, after more than two years in the program, I feel free, peaceful and hopeful.  With the help of my HP, I have the ability to reach for the unknown and truly live.

Peace,

Jane
